MY CYLINDER IS HARD TO OPEN. CLOSING IT IS FINE & SO IS SHOOTING. HOWEVER, I HAVE TO BANG IT WITH MY PALM WHILE PUSHING THE CYL RELEASE SLIDER. ANY IDEAS AS TO HOW TO CORRECT THIS?

Just a guess, but I would say the extractor rod is loose, or the gun has excessive end shake on the cylinder or yoke. One or both will contribute to the problem you are experiencing.

Try screwing the extractor rod in COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. They are left-hand thread. If you can turn it at all with your fingers with the cylinder closed then it is not tight enough. A few turns counter-clockwise (viewed from the muzzle end) and the difficult opening issue should be solved if that is indeed the cause.
Interesting. By Yoke screw do you mean the sideplate screw on the right side just above the trigger and below the cylinder? Never heard of that one loosening up and causing that kind of problem.
Before you open it next time, look between the rear of the frame and the cylinder and see if anything is touching. If the extractor rod is touching the frame, and not the cases then it it most likely loose, and not a yoke problem.
Huh, the center of the extractor touches the recoil shield and the center rod of the extractor assembly passes through that center into a hole in recoil shield and presses back the bolt and via it the thumb piece. The cases should have a little free space so the cylinder can turn them into place easily.
Another thing that can cause difficult cylinder opening is a sticky lug under the barrel.

Check the front locking bolt under the barrel. If it is sticky due to dried oil or a lack of cleaning, it can make the cylinder difficult to open. A little soaking with solvent or some good penetrating oil will usually free it up.

My extractor rod came loose on my 629....could not release the cylinder. At first I thought I had stuck cases or carbon build up but finally figured it out.
Yes. Loose it will cause play in the yoke and cylinder

Don't you hate it when the OP asks for advice and then doesn't come back?
That it would cause play makes perfect sense. I can certainly see where that would cause issues with closing it, but I can't quite see how that would cause a problem with opening. Was it actually able to slide forward when closed? Maybe keeping the bolt from being able to push the ejector rod pin far enough?
