If anyone can tell me the cylinder length for both the Model 29 and 27, I'd appreciate it. I tried asking S&W Customer Support, but they could not help. Thanks in advance

27-2 = 1.625"
29-2 = 1.75"

The cylinder length of both models changed in 1982, when the recessed chambers feature was discontinued. The dash 2 and previous series is longer than the dash 3 and later of both models. So, which series of these two magnificent revolvers are you interested in?

Model 27, -1, and -2 cylinder is 1.67 inches; M27-3 and later is 1.57 inches

Model 29, -1, and -2 cylinder is 1.74 inches; M29-3 and later is 1.69 inches.

Thanks for the info. I intend to have a current Model 29's barrel cut down to replicate the look of 3.5 inch Model 27. It occurred to me that cutting a Model 29's barrel down to 3.5 inch may not look exactly the same since the cylinders are different lengths.

The barrels on the two models are different also. The Model 27s had a tapered barrel while the Model 29 usually is found with the bull or Target barrel.

This photograph has a Model 1950 and a Model 25-2. You can see the difference in the barrel profiles. A better picture would be from the top, when I return from our business trip, I will post one.

I'm curious as to why you'd want your M29 to look like a M27?

Not only are the cylinders quite a bit different in length, the M27 barrel is tapered and the M29 is straight (heavy barrel); there is a normally larger gap in front of the M27's cylinder than the M29 has, regardless of the loss of the P&R feature or its presence. The frames are the same size, so the shorter cylinder of the M27 takes up less space in the cutout of the frame, and the forcing cone of the M27 protrudes more. Anybody who is versed in S&W's would spot the differences right off. Below are my M29-2 (nickel) and my M27-2 (blue). Both have the longer cylinders of the P&R guns, but the difference between them and the shorter cylinders is noticed at the rear of the cylinder, not the front.

I've always liked the look of the barrel profile on a 3.5" Model 27, where the straight portion of the barrel begins to protrude beyond the ejector shroud. I realize a Model 29 doesn't have a tapered barrel, but I still think it would look nice.

The S&W Model 29 Mountain Gun shipped with a 4 inch tapered barrel. Sounds like that would be a good fit for what you want.
