I bought a 36 today. Taking it apart tonighte for cleaning the cylinder release retainer screw broke off. The gentleman I bought it from opened when he handed it to me. I closed and opened it numerouse other times. Put the screw driver to it and the head fell off. Where do I get another for a nickel J frame 36.

I tied to find one from SW a few weeks ago, All they have is the new style. If yours is the kind that tapers at the end it's gonna be tough to find, especially nickle, try in the Gunsmith section one of the members there may have one.

I don't know if you are aware or not but that is NOT a screw holding the cylinder release on. It is a NUT. Sort of a cap that screws down onto the threaded stud. Take a close look under good light and you will see internal threads inside the open end.

If you are aware of this and talking about something else I apologize.

Unable to reply to your PM as your box is full.

It appears that on some older flat latch Mod 36's it is a screw that threads into the Bolt ( Cylinder Release Bolt) while on other ones with the standard thumb release it is indeed a nut threaded onto a stud. If the stud is actually broken off of the bolt you will need to replace the bolt. I do not know if this is a drop in part or if it needs fitted to the revolver. It's end should be flush with the breech face when pressed forward to release thye cylinder

Haere is a link to S&W Manuals / parts lists on Steves pages. Look at the Mod 36 and Model 60 manuals.
