Hi, this new-to-me M&P from 1950? is a great new addition to my collection. The cylinder release thumb piece has more stand-off than I am used to seeing. It works fine, I'm wondering if thumb pieces have variable thickness? The one on my 60-something Model 10 is visibly thicker and wonder what is up with the other.
Perhaps a "mismatch" of components between the older bolt and thumbpiece (top), and the newer design (bottom). The newer thumbpiece would definitely stand off of the older bolt style more prominently. Is the protrusion on the bottom of your thumbpiece slotted?
I believe the "island" or protrusion found on the bottom of the thumbpiece is (was) also a fitted part, in the sense that it can be "narrowed" by filing to better fit the frame slot, or shortened to increase it's range of motion forward and back...... and, "lowered", depending on the desired proximity of the bottom of the thumbpiece body to the outer surface of the frame.
I've also seen the thumbpiece fitted too low, which is really an aggravation, causing it to rub/drag on the surface of the frame.
The "stand-off" distance of the thumbpiece isn't a critical dimension.I have several S&Ws that are probably close to what you have on your gun. It is far better than one set too low that drags on and scuffs the frame! Don't worry about it!
