Does anyone know if a Smith 1917 cylinder stop would fit in a Smith Model of 1926 (3rd Model)? If not, what era/model cylinder stop would fit that gun? I have one that is a little loser than I like and might think about replacing it if one can be had.

Like everything else, I imagine that the size and shape of this part has changed over the years. I can't find anything on it. Does anyone know where there might be some info on the history and/or evolution of this part?

Highly probable it would work. But they have different parts #s on Gun Parts.

Model 24, .44 Spl:
Smith & Wesson 24 Revolver Parts, Schematics | Gun Parts Corp.

1917:
Smith & Wesson 24 Revolver Parts, Schematics | Gun Parts Corp.

However, the model 24 is a much later vintage, so the 1917 part might be a better match to the model 1926.

There's no description of the evolution of that part in any of the books I have. Undoubtedly changes were too unimportant to document. Likely just different/easier ways to machine rather than functional changes.

You could compare the 1917 part photo to your Mod 1926 part.

Thanks Jim. That is how my thoughts were going, but I was hoping for a learned second opinion. Again, thanks.

I can't compare the parts right now because I have run into a stuck side plate screw on the 1926. I guess I am going to have to solve that problem before I can get to the one that I really care about.

Bummer. Maybe you know all the techniques to get that screw out.

But if not, there's lots of threads about dealing with stuck screws, just do a search.

This thing is really in there. It almost feels like I would probably turn the head off the screw before it will let go and come out.

I have exhausted all of my usual methods. I have a pencil torch that runs on butane coming. Going to heat that puppy up. Hopefully it will break free. I have Kroil sitting on it. Hopefully some will soak down in. I need to keep an eye on this, though. Kroil might want "lift" the bluing. I know of similar concoctions that have done that.

I an terrified of buggering the screw. It looks virgin so far, despite my efforts. I hope that when I am done I am not looking for a new screw. One with this finish could be hard to find.

The cylinder stops are the same type. They didn't change until the screw in front of the cylinder stop was done away with. A small amount of fitting may be required. It should not be much of a problem.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate this info.

I bought a cylinder stop for my Wolf & Klar 3rd Model .44 from Jack First for $30. Took a little fitting, but not much, just like stated above.
