I recently had a Nickel 19 come my way (AZE serial). The cylinder is Flaking the rest of the gun is great. Are the cylinders serialed to the gun. I have found a replacement from a parts guy. Wondering if any issues swapping out. I know it needs to be timed. I think it would be cheaper to swap it out than get it refinished. I will post pics soon.

I have swapped cylinders on totally different J Frames before and had no issues.

You do have to get the timing lined up and for me that was done by a gunsmith.

Only other issue I could imagine would be if there is some drastic change in the manufacturing of the cylinder between - (dash) models. But I doubt that.

There should be no serial number on the cylinder. Just on the butt.

I have had a couple of cylinder changes, or attempts. The issue I ran into was the length of the yoke barrel. So, if the yoke barrel is too long with the new cylinder, and you cut it to fit, it no longer fits the original cylinder, if you want to change back to original later (depending on how much has to be cut, you may not be able to stretch it enough to install the original cylinder) Two other issues might be carry up, and B/C gap. Sometimes everything fits great, sometimes not so much!

With an AZE prefix I'm betting its a 19-5 not a 19 no dash, there is a big difference.

The 19-5 was the first revision that is not recessed, this actually shouldn't be a problem if the replacement is a 19-4 recessed cylinder because although it will be longer at the rear the bullet primer is in exactly the same place.
Where you might encounter a problem is if it's a 19-3 cylinder with the gas ring on the yoke instead of the cylinder in which case you would need to replace your yoke arm as well IIRC.

I've replaced/exchanged several cylinders in kK-frames, generally, with little problem. As has been noted above because of the location of the gas ring, among other issues, you may need to use the crane that is on the replacement cylinder. Sometimes, you might have a take-up (timing) issue, but that can often be remedied with a new cylinder hand and/or fitting another extractor. Depending on the model, that can be a bit more involved.
