On March 15 at 6:00 am, 200,000 Wehrmacht infantrymen crossed the Czech border. Within four hours, they reached Prague. This was the end of the democratic Czech Republic. Neville Chamberlain admitted to the world the failure of "appeasement". Although history books state that WWII started on Sept 1,1939 when Germany invaded Poland, I think that this was at least the preamble. On Sept 3, 1939 France and England declared war on Germany.

I think the Italians going into Abyssinia, AKA Ethiopia, predates the Czech invasion. I think some of the Japanese stunts in China also predate Europe's woes! Despots around the world, wouldn't leave lesser governments alone.

At least one commentator claims WWII started in a railcar in France in November 1918. I tend to agree!

I also saw the movie Anthropoid mentioned above and highly recommend it. I knew that the assassination occurred but I did not know the back story. The Nazi reaction to it certainly convinced the citizens that Germany was not there friend.

As a messenger during WWI Hitler did OK. He even won an Iron Cross for his exploits. He should have stuck to running messages as running the whole German military was over his pay grade.
Talk about biting the hand that feeds you - The officer who recommended Hitler for his Iron Cross was - wait for it! - a Jewish reserve lieutenant (leutnant).

I would suggest reading Niall Ferguson's excellent history titled "The War of the World", Penguin 2009 if memory serves me correctly. Gives a lot of the information referred to above, but in chronological order. Yes, WWII started in a railroad car in Compaigne (Spelling?). Dave_n

Watched a good movie last night on netflicks...Anthropoid about the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich who was the highest ranking nazi who was assassinated.

I love movies with real life happy endings like this one has.. "Zero Dark Thirty" is another... the movie "Midway" is a third, "Bonnie & Clyde" is a fourth...I'm sure lil brother Ringo can come up with a bunch of similar movies based on real life events with happy endings.

Thanks for the great post sir, to the OP.

I just finished "With Paulus At Stalingrad" by Gen Wilhelmina Adam. The poor grunts paid a horrible price for allowing Hitler rise to power.Adam was the Adjutant to Pauling and this was an interesting inside view of what took place. It is revealing that in 1941-42 the soldiers and some leaders felt the was was going to be loss and had lost faith in Der Furher. Unfortunately there were those such as Paulus who followed orders to the letter when all was lost and Hitler repeatedly refused to allow the 6 Army to surrender but instead starve, freeze and die in place.

Great post as always. Ive got quite a few original snap-shots, press photos etc--from the beginnings of the Germans demise. Many of mine were taken in France, Poland, Czecholslovakia, Hungary, Russia etc. I had em posted at one time here, but photo-bucket "changed" something and all my pix disappeared.

Anyway, if I had them online somewhere? I know you'd enjoy them. Some interesting combat shots in Poland, France and Russia. Operation Barbarossa shots taken and some famed battlefield areas including Leningrad, Stalingrad, Kiev etc.

Hitler's Regimental Kdt was full-blood Jewish and in WWII-Hitler ordered that he be left alone and protected from being taken and or killed.
