I just finished "With Paulus At Stalingrad" by Gen Wilhelmina Adam. The poor grunts paid a horrible price for allowing Hitler rise to power.Adam was the Adjutant to Pauling and this was an interesting inside view of what took place. It is revealing that in 1941-42 the soldiers and some leaders felt the was was going to be loss and had lost faith in Der Furher. Unfortunately there were those such as Paulus who followed orders to the letter when all was lost and Hitler repeatedly refused to allow the 6 Army to surrender but instead starve, freeze and die in place.
Island of Fire is excellent as well. If I recall--Adam was a top aide in or chief of staff for 6th Army. Im getting rusty as ive not educated myself recently on the subject. He was an Oberst at the time and--if you see that famed photo with Paulus and many division and Korps Kdts in it-Adam is wear a tailor-made and has the nicest-looking uniform in that photo.
Sorry for the run-on.
BTW, id love reading the above-mentioned book. The best ive read to date is Jason Mark's Island of Fire. Even the paperback is VERY costly--but very worth it too. I think I paid $90?? or so for it brand new.
