I recently asked for help on a NM3. With your help I looked in a antique book and online and confirmed it was a DA44. ser 77xx. 4" barrel russian 1 7/16 cyl. Question is when ser numbers are listed, are you listing DA44 as NM3's. thanks for everyones help. I wish mine had been in better shape as others are. i read all earlier posts and I would like to see it shoot as others have. I compliment the ways i have seen some models displayed on this forum. a friend gave me this with some other guns, thanks again.

Luckyblue, Your gun is a Model 3 Double Action, also known as the New Model Navy No. 3 Model. See page 109 in Supica & Nahas " Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edit." for a description.

The Double Actions are in a separate serial range than the New Model #3 single actions. Mine letters as having shipped to London in 1897. It's 35,388. Maybe someone here has one close to yours, but being as low as it is, should put it in the mid-1880s.

I've shot mine with low powered cowboy action loads, and with black powder loads. It shoots great.
