Can anyone tell me when S&W began stamping their logo on the right side of the frame on the D.A.44? I have one in the 102xx range and was wondering about when it was made. Thanks!

I think mine is in the 30,000 range. It lettered as shipping to London in 1897. It doesn't have the logo stamped. The few I've seen with the logo were shipped post-1900.

Then can I assume that what I have is a Frontier rather than the earlier DA 44? It has the 1-7/16ths cylinder but the chambers appear to be for a round with no bottleneck, such as the 44 Russian. I would like to send for a factory letter but I am confused as to which one I have.
My understanding is that any gun with the 1 7/16" cylinder is a 44 Russian. All of the 44/40's have 1 9/16" but later production 44 Russians also have the longer cylinder. Kinda confusing
Gary is right. 1 7/16" = .44 Russian.
1 9/16" with serial less than 15,341 = 44/40
1 9/16" with serial greater than 15,340 = 44 Russian.
I would love to find the matching .44 Russian serial to go with my 44/40.
