Does anybody still get the paper home delivered? I just renewed my Mother's subscription 965.00 for the year. The sunday paper is 3/4' thick, down from about 2". The classified used to be 4 pages. Now they are 1/4 of a single page.
Actually it used to be 2 papers. The Providence Journal in the morning, and the Evening Bulletin at night. Now it is just one rag in the morning.
If it were not for my mother, I would never buy it. Especially seeing as I do not have a puppy;)

I cannot remember the last time that I saw much less subscribed to a paper. The city made us buy a small local paper with our taxes, but that was killed a few elections ago. Apparently, newspapers still exist.

Yes, I still get the paper. Why? When I get up in the morning I simply like to sit on the couch reading it. Ours is down to only a few pages as well. I look forward to the letters to editor and (sorry) the obits. Years ago the only way I found out about the deaths of some old friend's parents. Now, the old friends are in there.

Yes we get the one paper delivered to the house, the other big local paper will not come up here we get their product on the computer. FWIW I think its just going to be a bit longer and it will all be electronically delivered.

Of course the price will not go down if anything it will go up! As a proud Luddite as long as I can get a real paper or magazine to read I will continue to do so. Its just so different and not as comfortable getting the paper on the computer!

I just renewed at $230 a year. Granted, it's not as thick as it used to be. I get delivery at 4 am just in time for my morning coffee.

And I stand with you!

I have a subscription to the Gettysburg Times with home delivery. My uncle got it for me as thanks for what I do for my aunt and uncle through the year because of my aunt's medical issues.

Wish I could afford our local daily

My Dad was a printer for the Richmond Times Dispatch (morning) and the Richmond News Leader (afternoon). I was a paperboy in my youth and later a photographer, reporter, editor and finally managing editor of a group of weeklies, eventually bought by the holding company for the Times Dispatch.

So my life was greatly influenced by the printed word delivered each day.

I miss a daily printed paper but occasionally pick up a copy from the news stand.

News reporting has reached a level so low that the grain of salt that used to be required now is the whole salt shaker, IMHO.

I cancelled my subscription over two years ago. Not only because the price for home delivery became excessive, over $500 per year, but it had become mainly a political propaganda rag. I get all the news I need from the internet, and do not miss the local newspaper in the slightest way. I am sorry only that it took me so long to dump it.

I used to enjoy reading the paper. Haven't done that in many years. Don't trust what they print, so why bother.
Internet news services aren't accurate either, but I can compare four or five different sources easier and glean some facts.
Real journalism is mostly dead.

$965 for the year:eek: That is $2.64 per day! I don't pay that much for law books!!!

Unfortunately, even some (maybe a lot) of libraries are no longing getting actual newspapers. Used to really enjoy sitting down for Sun breakfast with 2 newspapers (NYT/Philly enq), till it became cost prohibitive and their Sunday papers just political shill. At least several years ago (maybe 5-10) would pick up a NYT on a day they had some more balanced actual news in it, but can't remember if it was thurs or fri. You could read articles in it months later, and they were still relevant and not carried anywhere else.

Will not pay for a subscription newspaper anymore, even a local one. There are free facebook pages that have more relevant local news than the local papers/websites.

Got rid of mine, although I enjoyed reading an actual paper the same as I enjoy an actual book, delivery became so erratic you never new if you'd have one or not. The papers response was we'll credit your account. Don't want a credit, want my paper, which, by the way, you made me pay for in advance.

I haven't opened a newspaper since I delivered them as a kid. That was over 60 years ago. All the news I need is on the grapevine.

It's been many years since they had the Evening Bulletin, I really missed the Rhode Islander in the Sunday paper, the only paper I get now is the Narragansett Times, it comes out twice a week.

My mother and dad were not educated past high school, but both were avid readers. We got a daily paper and the Reader's Digest. Most of the papers I wrote in high school and many ideas, came out of the Digest.

I started delivering papers when I was 10 or so. My son got a route when he was old enough and as a result, I acted as a substitute carrier up into my 60's. Most of my Smiths were bought with paper route money. Also, whichever Golden Retriever lived with us at the time, enjoyed the early morning walks.

We now get the local paper and the Chicago Tribune daily. It is expensive, but I like to read the obits and rest of the paper with my morning tea. I also read the larger paper that has obits from my home town. I also just resubscribed to my hometown weekly.

I am proud to say I am a reader.

Only reason we still get it is because Mom can no longer remember how to run the computer to read it online, and she still likes to read it. The Houston Chronicle started going downhill as soon as the Houston Post went under and they did not have any competition left. The Chronicle is so slanted now that all I do is read the sports and comics. Even the sports these days have gone from entertainment to political theater. When Mom is gone, the paper will be as well. Darn thing costs almost $500/year these days.

I guess I'm such a creature of habit that I just enjoy my early morning paper while I'm drinking my coffee. But my new carrier is so inconsistent with my delivery that I never know whether it will be in my mailbox when I get up or not. It arrives anywhere from 4AM to 8:30 AM and I never know which day that will be. If it's late I read it online but it's just not the same. I would cancel it but I just like my quiet time with my paper and coffee in the morning.

Wow! I had no idea print papers had become so expensive. Last print papers I read were at the office, company's dime, during my lunch breaks, before I retired ten years ago.

Nowadays I subscribe to two national papers, digital editions, and read them on my iPad, which I find an easy, comfortable way to consume them. I also peruse Google news, a news article aggregator, most days.

I retain the packing paper from Amazon boxes to serve the role of yesteryear's newspapers in charcoal chimney BBQ lighting and counter/floor protection, etc., for messy jobs.

I have understood that the only San Antonio newspaper is running on fumes, little advertising revenue coming in, and circulation has fallen sharply. It is no longer being printed in San Antonio but rather in Houston and copies are trucked in from there. As I said earlier, I do not miss it at all, and I won't be crying at its funeral-if there is one.
