Found this in the yard this morning. That WAS a metal tube inside of a 12 foot pvc pipe and filled with concrete! I had several bird feeders sitting atop of my tower. After several trys I finally had a squirrel proof bird feeder, unfortunately it wasn't bear proof.

I'm thinking of constructing a similar contraption but instead of reinforcing with concrete and pvc pipe, adding a spring towards the bottom. The spring would allow a bear to grab the pole and pull it towards him without having to break it off midlength. I realize he would still bust all of the bird feeders but that would be less damage than what he has done this time.

Any ideas on a design that would be both squirrel AND bear proof would be appreciated.

How about a 4 inch dia metal pole with concrete. I had one of those big satalite dishes on one 12 feet off the ground and had to dig it up. My 8000 lb warn winch wouldn't pull it down. Slide a pvc pipe over that. I think the pipe in the broken one was too short. and too small in dia.

Wow, I have no idea what to do to make it better but that's crazy!

I think you'd be OK with length of 4" diameter standard pipe set in a fairly deep, i.e., four -five foot deep caisson footing, with the feeders out of black bears' reach at about eight feet above grade. You might need to cover the pole with a PVC sleeve to discourage squirrels from climbing it. A bear isn't able to get much purchase on a pipe with its front paws, so I'd doubt it could pull it over, if well set.

I once had a problem with squirrels climbing a pole to reach a bird feeder mounted on top. I wound the pole with wire in barber pole fashion and attached an electric fence charger. That ended the squirrel climbing problem and I suspect bears would find it an equally shocking experience.

I think my next bird feeder will have a metal pipe filled with concrete instead of pvc. I don't think I could burry it 5 feet deep. Its hard digging a 5 inch hole around here with the amount of rocks I got.

What a pain in the butt....

When camping in bear country I would place my food in a bag and hang it from a tree limb. Do you have any trees in the yard that you could hang your bird feeders in and still be able to watch the birds?

oh yes plenty of trees in and around the yard. But if I would place bird feeders in the trees, I will get about 25 squirrels cleaning out my feeders in an hour.

I gotta tell ya, I dont think the problem is your design....I think your pproblem is......
YOU GOT BEARS IN YOUR BACKYARD!!!!!

What if you glued broken glass to the top or razor blades on edge on the top? Wouldn't that stop the squirrels? Probably would have the neighbors wondering why all the squirrels were running around with bandages on their feet.

I'm sure you have done your internet homework, but if not, would this help?

Nothing is bear proof!

Two days ago, one of my tenants told me her daughter had left peanuts in a bag in her car and the bear opened the doors and ripped everything apart. So when she called the game commission to trap and move the bear, she asked if she should keep the doors locked. He said, NO! They'll rip your doors off!

I had a place in southcentral PA that had a mobile home foundation that we used for the laundry & bathroom. It had a plexiglass window. The men would hang their deer in a section of the building. One time a bear broke through that window because he smelled blood and then got out the same way, jumping onto & over the washing machine.

Use a steel post and wire it to an electric fence charger. Watched a bear get zapped by a similar arrangement once and it was funny as h___ seeing that sucker run.

Dang man, the answer has been in front of us all the time and we couldn't see it. INSTALL A BEAR FEEDER AND LET THE BIRDS TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES.

Oh Well...so hanging your vittles from a rope may not work. Maybe as this picture shows we should just serve them when they're ready!

P.S. I hear they do not tip well, but the house specialty of the day is fine with them!

Animals that were formerly self-sufficient are now showing signs of belonging to the Democratic Party... as they have apparently learned to just sit and wait for the government to step in and provide for their care and sustenance.

Add some long runs of re-bar inside the concrete and install the electric fence at the top. Secondly, install a motion video cam to capture the action.
