I've got a 3953 and 6953 and like 'em both for carry. I like the size, triggers, feel, and reliability of these 3rd gen Smiths. (And if I want, I can put a slide with safety on the frame and get a safety as well as longer first shot.)

But I would really like some more info on both the 4053 and 4553 or any of the similar DAOs in both calibers: aprox. prices, how scarce, user experience, etc. I'd probably "retire" a couple of my regular 40 or 45 carry pieces (4516 and .40 SW99compact plus a compact Sig P250) in lieu of either of those two guns.

Thanks in advance.

The 4053 single stack can be converted to a 10mm. I have the 4013 and 4053 and converted the 4013 to 10mm. I prefer the DA/SA over just DAO myself. I may eventually convert the 4053, but haven't done so yet.

The 4053 was produced from 1991-97. It is 7" long with a 3.5" barrel and weighs 27 ounces according to Genitron. It has a 9 round magazine. The frame is alloy but it's like a 45 frame; and because of that, it can be converted to 10mm.

I have a 4053 in my carry rotation. The 4053s are great shooters!

I have 3 of them, and they're in good condition. Just like the 3953 I sold you. Interested, PM me.

The 4053 (non-TSW) is on the large frame & is much larger than the 3953 and 6953 you mentioned. The 4053TSWs, either pre-rail or railed would be of similar size to those.

There was no 4553 non-TSW made, only 4553TSWs either pre-rail or railed, of course on the large frame.

None of them are rare, except when you're looking specifically for one. :p
