Rented it from the Redbox yesterday and watched it last night. I'm not a Hollywood awards show fan, but if Gary Oldman doesn't get the Oscar for best actor, it'll be a travesty. Not a high action movie by any means, but a good depiction of just how close it was for England in 1940 and the iron will Churchill brought as PM to convince the Parliament that there was no negotiating with evil. Great show!

I agree that Oldman should win for Best Actor by a country mile. He was totally brilliant in the role. However, it bothers me that the movie invented certain scenes for dramatic effect that never really happened and the movie also overplays (IMHO) certain aspects of history for the sake of telling a better story and making a successful movie. Hence, no "Best Picture" award from me.

Another good one:
"Into The Storm" starring Brendan Gleeson

All the pundents say that Oldman is a lock, one of the few this award season. He's already won the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Award, the other two big hollywood awards, as well as the British award (BAFTA). Hard to see him losing the Oscar. He is heavily favored in oscar betting.

As far as the outdoor scenes go, I thought it was an unrealistic low-budget movie.

Movie: Long lines of troops waiting in silence to be picked ip with no means of transport in sight. No talking, cursing, pushing or shoving. Just quiet beaches for the most part.

Reality: Extensive video and photos shot at the time show mass confusion, lots of the men shooting at the German Luftwaffe planes with rifles and Bren guns, smoke, flames, burning equipment and debris, wounded and dead lying around, etc.

All the movie producers had to do was replicate some reasonable approximation of actual events to make a much better movie.
The script, plot, and action scenes were basically already written for them in the historical accounts, and they just blew them off.
