A friend asked me to clean a S&W 38 Spl 2 inch barrel revolver with blued metal and wood grips. I'm trying to find out it's model name and date of manufacture. The only markings with helpful information is on the right side of the barrel: "38 S&W Spl." The serial number at the bottom of the grip is C977XXX."

1. Is there a model name? If so, what is it?

2. What is the date of manufacture?

Any help will certainly be appreciated.

Thanks.

That would be a 38 M&P, and if you look at the frame where it will be exposed when you open the cylinder you should see a Mod 10-6 and it would have shipped in about 1967.

If you call Smith and Wesson Customer Service and give them the serial number they will be able to answer your questions.

Thanks for not replies.

H. Richard, I looked there but noticed nothing before my initial post. However, upon closer examination, lint apparently obscured the writing. It says: "MOD," but the writing under that isn't clear. The last digit is definitely a 5, but the digits before that may we'll be a 10, but it certainly isn't clear.

Welcome! The gun you describe with that serial number would be a model 10-5. Bet that is what you'll find under the lint if it was stamped properly.

S & W made a 4" heavy (untapered) barrel version of the same gun, which is the model 10-6.

For further ID requests, here is a good post for needed information:

The name of it is a .38 Military & Police.
