I am considering purchasing a Smith & Wesson 38 Special that has 38 S & W Special CTG on one side of the barrel and on top of the barrel is listed 3 patent dates of Feb 1906, Sep. 1909 & Dec. 1914. The serial number on the butt end of the gun is S 820649 and the cyclinder shows the same. I would like to know the approximate date it was manufactured and approximate value. It is in very good condition.

Thanks
Charlie

Hi Charlie...Welcome to the forum.

You are describing a post WWII transition pre-model 10. Probably 1947 or so. Value depends on some more info like barrel length, barrel ser number match?, type of stocks and do they number to the gun?, finish type, and complete description of what "very good condition" means. Could be $200 for a shooter or $750+ for collector grade but you may want to shift this inquiry to the post war forum. You'll get more attention there.

38 S & W Special CTG
By the way, CTG is an abreviation for "Cartridge". IE, this mark is just telling you that this one is chambered for the ".38 S&W Special cartridge", usually known more simply as the ".38 Special".
