Hello, my son recently acquired a 6 inch one with 4 screws. The barrel flat, cylinder, yoke, star, butt and right grip are all matched with 3548xx ( C prefix ). It has the bright blue finish. Would this be a 55 or 56 assembled gun? Thanks!

Yes, likely from 1955 (production). It should still be a 5-screw frame at that time, if you count the one under the right stock panel. Someone with more knowledge will probably narrow down the ship date for you soon.

Besides the four screws in the sideplate the one in the front of the trigger-guard is the fifth screw of a five screw gun.

Thanks fellas. This has a total of 4 screws. The largest diameter screw head at the right side top is not there.

Interesting, may have been a very early 4-screw, or an earlier frame not built into a complete gun until later.

So, the serial number is actually C3548xx. :)

C3548xx probably shipped in 1956. Nearby serial numbers were shipping in the first half of that year. That would make it a very early four screw frame (for an M&P). The very first four screw units were .357 Combat Magnum revolvers, the first of which were assembled in December, 1955.
