Pre-29 44 mag 5" barrel?

I've only seen a couple of guns with that kind of front sight…

Does anyone know if there is a name for this style of sight?…

The closest identified sight I see is shown on page 32 of
Volume 56, Number 2 • Summer 2022… the King Modified Patridge.

The one the OP has isn't a King, that I can tell, but it is a modified Patridge blade.

Documentation of the Pre-29

I think the OP's statement that the previous owner was a machinist tells the story. Very cool gun btw! I'd suggest writing down any pertinent information about the original owner and keeping that with the revolver.
This gun was part of a collection of George Meyer in Iowa. the family asked me to produce a book documenting his firearms. He was a master engraver and carver. Some of his work is truly remarkable. His competition rifles were gorgeous as well as accurate. He had some nearly NIB 44 Specials from late 50s. This was his everyday carry so was very honored to be offered it. Not sure value of any of the 44s but this one is very special.

We would very much like to see some of his engraving work, especially engraved S&Ws.
