I already posted this on the Colt Forums but you never know, I've seen some pretty knowledgeable Colt info over here too.

I have a six inch blue Python from an acquaintance recently deceased who had stated on several occasions that he purchased it in 1956 or 1957. It is missing the front sight. I understand that some very early production Pythons have a "Tall Rib" barrel and the front sight that eventually became the standard for 1st generation Pythons will not fit these early "Tall Rib" guns.
Deer Hollow sells a reproduction a Tall Rib front sight for $125 and the standard new old stock Python front sights are readily available for $25 - $50.
Can anyone give me some guidance on measurements to take with calipers to determine if this is one of the Tall Rib guns or a standard 1st generation Python?
I 'd like to purchase the correct front sight on the first attempt. I'd like to take some measurements of the barrel rib/front sight mounting slot to positively identify if this is a tall rib or "standard" Python before I start buying parts. I already have an enormous collection of unused gun parts because I assumed something, lol.

Maybe I should be getting a hold of a known non high rib Python and compare the two with calipers but I just thought I'd ask around first.
