So I recently acquired the new MTN Gun and also the new Kodiak. Each has its own faults, but I think Smith won on this 4” Mountain VS Bear go around. The smith front sight is great when it’s low or shaded light with the brass bead, however the colored ramp is visible in low light and bright light. I personally like the looks of the unfluted Colt cylinder, however significantly lighter is Smith. The wood grips fit well in my hand but the rubber grips on the Colt are much more positive. The rear sight on the Colt was better than the one on my new python, however I ran out of adjustment and the Colt is high at 15 yards. At first I was WAY high and off the steel circle. That Kodiak is the bee's knees. Is it notably easier to shoot, with the weight and the ports?
I was really anticipating that it would be the bee’s knees and really wanted it to be. However personally I feel 629 outperformed the Kodiak. For me the bear hug grips fit me well and with the wood grips of the 629 it wasn’t an issue even with stout hand loads at max. I put about 100-125 rounds through each of them. My groups were even better with the 629. Neither really liked the cast 44 special loads.

I have a 4 inch Anaconda that’s had a Heffron trigger job. The front sight on mine was also a bit low. Why’d they do that? I got a front sight blade from Harris, I think. It’s right on the button, now.

And I have a 629-4 Mountain Gun. Box stock. I bought it off Gunbroker for $475 a long time ago. It was a good investment.

It would take extensive Ransom Rest testing to find which one is more accurate. And then the difference would be minuscule.
You want the Smith if you’re going to carry it. Range time, you’re going to want that big Colt. Do the only logical thing and get both. ( dash 4 Smith. I can’t recommend the new stuff)

*I also have a 4 inch Python (new manufacture) that I would loved to have compared it to the brand new 686 Mountain gun that I bought. However the 686 MG wouldn’t work, and was falling apart after 2 cylinder fulls, when it did fire, which even then wasn’t all the time. I had that POS for 2 days, Smith has had it for 3 weeks. Smith needs to watch that video of the Colt revolver manufacturing facility.
