According to my S & W book see below:

686-4 6 shot - Introduced 1993 - 1997. They came out with a 7 shot in 95.

From your serial # prefix it dates around 2003. Very confusing.

My guess is between 93 & 97. They introduced the 686 - 5 in 97.

Someone else with more knowledge on this topic might be more help.

Looks like a block of S/N's from BVA to CAF beginning letters were set aside and issued in 2003. They fall between Aug 94 and Jan 96 series.

New to the forum and am trying to find out some info on the M686-1 I aquired. The serial # is AWV89**. What does the -1 mean and does anyone know the born on date?
