Death Of A 650

Actually...If it were me..I wwould remove the machine and take it home. Get it workin again and then sell it. Of course I AM a little hard nosed...or some other body part

Absolutely! I don't know how many times I've told friends who are actually far more handy than I not to use WD40 as a lubricating oil. It's a penetrating oil, like Kroil, but not as efficient as Kroil. It loses any lubricity it has after a few days.

WD-40 does a great job of washing away other lubes. It does make a great cleaner though.

Way back in the early 80's, my oldest brother decided to lube the bearings on his bicycle wheels with WD-40. He said it rode smooth as silk for a few days, then the bearings locked up and were destroyed. I heeded his warning and have never used it as a lube.

I used to use Vasoline for wheel bearing grease. Worked wonderfully on my bicycles. It was all I could find in the house.

In his defense, I imagine all of us have pushed something to the side and came back later to find rust or cob webs and realized that we had neglected it. Life happens. Sometimes it isn't that we don't care, we just got distracted and forgot about it. Then when we realize it, we procrastinate because it seems like a big chore to get back in working order.

I will agree, there is no good excuse for leaving outside in the elements though..

PB Blaster is really good penetrating fluid, and likely available at local auto parts store.

Agree but no reason to replace it with new
A little elbow grease when it is needed and he still has a good press

Why would the son, all of a sudden, appreciate something that he has let rust for many years? If the son develops an interest in using it, he has many options to get it running. He is an adult after all.

Have you spoken with Dillon Precision? They have a very reasonable flat rate to rebuild their presses. My 550 came back working better than new.

Ditto, mine went through a hurricane and they charged less than 100.00 to bring them back to new. I think they blast the frame, paint it and put all new attachments on it. Cant beat that deal!

EXACTLY
Has he even shown enough ambition to start cleaning?

Thee and me Brother, thee an' me.
I stopped "gifting" my older son anything of value years ago as he doesn't take care of anything.
My younger son still uses the pocketknife I gave him 25 years ago.
I raised them the same, but they sure have different values.

Not so long ago, I showed my uncle an AR I had built. He was visibly pleased to see the fire salvaged Leupold 1-4 he had given me back in the 80's riding atop the upper receiver.

Back to the press, would this not also be covered by the lifetime no bs warranty? Or has Dillon discontinued that?

I thought it was. I seem to recall a story about an accidental discharge that put a bullet into the press, and THAT was covered.

Just what I understood to be true. I'm not saying it should or shouldn't, I have no dog in this fight.

Dillon undoubtedly would restore this press, but for what purpose? The son likely would just set it outside to deteriorate again. Maybe the son has pressure from the wife to "keep that junk out of the house".

I would give it a good home in a climate controlled environment and it's own place on the reloading bench...

LGS regularly sees young people bringing in a gun or three. Generally their first statement is something like "I just inherited this, what can you give me for it?"

Might be why the family heirlooms are in my safe.
These things might not matter much to the dead, but still being among them, I can speak for the living that it really pisses us off.
