I am trying to decide between a S&W PC 44 or a Freedoms Arms 454. Price is not really a factor and I have really been on a Smith kick since getting my first revolver last June. On the other hand I have shot and handled Freedom Arms 454's and from what I have seen there is not a better made pistol. What are your thoughts? Thanks,
S/F

I may be the odd man out here but If I had the money and a freedom arms was available for a normal price I would get it for a hunting pistol compared to a smith about anyday... and I like my smiths.

I am not sure of the chambering though for me. The 454 would be fine but I may lean to it AND a conversion cylinder or two for the 45 colt and acp too for practice. I could personally be ok with a 45 colt or a 44 mag chambering in a FA also... for the hunting we have here anyhow.

You bought your first pistol in June now you want to move to either a .44 mag. or .454 Casull? Slow down gain some experience with the pistol you have. Give you quarry a ethical chance?

Both good choices. The FA is universally acknowledged as one of the highest quality field revolvers made, but S&Ws are no slouches there either and the PC revolvers have a good reputation.

It probably comes down a matter of which grip style you feel more comfortable shooting. The SAA grip is difficult for some to master. I generally prefer it, especially for heavy recoiling loads since it is easier to let roll in the hand. The SA style revolver carries well in the field too.

I would pick the FA. But it depends on what you think *you* can shoot better. The inevitible caliber discussion may be relevant depending on the game you intend to hunt, but .44 Mag handles about any task you need in N.A. For 45 Colt, I've found that a 282gr RCBS45-270SAA bullet moving along at around 950-1000fps will completely penetrate and put down most critters within normal open sight handgun hunting range, so don't really feel a need for full 454 Casull power in most cases. You can easily download a 454 Casull if you want to do so.

S.B. Didn't say it was my first pistol it was my first revolver. Maybe you should read the post before jumping to conclusions.

Either would be a great choice.
I had a FA 454 and sold it. It's more powerful than what is needed for most any game I would have ever gone after.
I currently have a FA in 44 as well as a few S&W's and it really comes down to which you prefer.
The FA is a bit more difficult to shoot as it will string shots vertically if there is any change at all in grip. They are quite well made.

I've got a pair of FA's a .454 Casull M-83 and a short barreled M-97 .44 special. Both are VERY accurate. My M-83 has an auxilliary .45 Colt cylinder and I tend to shoot Colts out of it 99% of the time.

Everyone is different but even with 45+ years of handgun shooting under my belt the .454 Casull with full power loads...Isn't much fun. Load it down with 250 or 275 gr lead and it's much more fun to shoot.

You need to shoot one before You buy one.

And a lot depends on WHAT your hunting too. You do NOT need .454 Casull power for ANY deer on this planet. I've killed a ton of them with .41's, .44 Specials and mags, and a few with the Colt.

Nothing wrong with a 6" .41 mag or .44 mag or one of the .45 Colt chambered Smiith N frames either.

I would go with the 460, then you can shoot 460, 454, 45 colt and you can get it cut for moons and be able to shoot 45acp out of it.
