Deer can be sneaky

It seems that a young buck in Eastern England who became separated from his herd has decided to hide with a flock of sheep. He does not stay with them all the time but hops in and out of the field at will, maybe when he wants some company. Perhaps word get around in the deer community and now all the deer will hide in farmers' fields going "baa".

From a tree stand in ocala i saw a deer in a field that had been clear cut 2 years prior. The were some brush piles and new growth going on. Once he crossed the log road he entered the lowest area in the field, there was a like a trench but not really because is was shallow ,just a low spot. He crawled all the way across that field in the low spot on his stomach. Being hardly the trophy buck i chose to let him go, didnt feel like cleaning one that day anyway but enjoyed the hunt. He sure did a good job of eluding hunters though.

Yes when your hunting deer are smart.

Deer are stealthy.

Deer are cunning.


But for some strange reason, when they get near a road, they get real stupid and jump right into oncoming traffic.

Why is that?

I also watched a nice buck do the same thing. While I could have easily
shot him, I let him pass as a sign of respect for his skill & cunning.

He was sneeking past a couple of other hunters and I was downwind, hiding in some
extremely thick thorn bushes. I had also "scent masked" my clothes prior to
going out using the Native Americans method, wood smoke.

While Deer are afraid of fire, the smell of smoke doesn't seem to bother 'em.

Many years ago, hunting along the Canadian border in North Dakota with a friend who was an experienced White Tail hunter, we were walking a tree/brush stand in a wheat field. From where I was I could see out the left side of the stand and I could see him on my right. From where he was he could see me and also see out the right side of the stand. We walked slowly and carefully. When we were about three quarters of the length of the stand I heard a noise behind us. We looked back and watched a huge (HUGE) White Tail buck go bouncing out of the stand behind us. I swear to this day that that bugger crawled on his knees between us and made his escape. We just looked at each other and watched him go........I don't think I would have shot even if I would have had a decent shot. That old buck was smarter than me........I guess which isn't saying much.

Somehow, deer know what type of lease you have. I was hog hunting in Texas and saw plenty of deer, but not one hog.

I also found out that deer have fingers because a deer walked not 20 yards from the blind I was in and gave me one.

Buddy came back from a muley hunt in central Nevada and claimed that the deer knew where the border of the Great Basin National Park is to the inch. His humour was not improved by being harassed by a badger one day as he and his hunting partner were trying to sneak up on some deer who had not got the national park zeroed in. The badger got so aggressive the partner eventually lost his temper, pulled a .45 and shot it. Needless to say the deer did not stay to see who got shot.

Not only are they sneaky...

...but they are also dishonest. I asked a deer the other day if he was a deer and he said, "No, I'm a sheep." It wasn't until I got home that I realized that I had been had.
