Defensive Gun Ownership - The Myth

As of now, it's still MY choice. Even if it's a bad one. That's the way I want to keep it.

Yeah....right. I'll accept the risks that come along with owing firearms just as I accept the risks of driving a car on the highway.

If you'd like a good statistical read, see if you can find a book called " The Bias against Guns" by John Lott. He gives all his reference material and just puts into words how most of them relate. Very interesting read, and very enlightening about how the anti gunners show what statistics fit their cause, and leave out what doesn't.

Any idiot with an agenda can design a hokey study to make their point. For the purpose of fair balance I also view many of the NRA funded studies with a grain of salt.

American Citizens are constitutionally allowed to own guns. Get over it.

I beg to differ. Our constitution protects our right to keep and bear arms, it does not "allow" it or any other right.

Guns are used to commit suicide more than they are used to prevent suicide.

If this shocking statistical revelation isn't enough to make you run screaming to the nearest gun buyback station...

Latest anti gun propaganda I've seen is an article from Atlantic Monthly, they try to compare auto deaths to gun deaths, they failed miserably, using their own stats.

They try to compare the death numbers, but can't line up the years for example the cite 2012 auto deaths versus 2011 gun deaths.

Another failure was that they claim auto deaths are falling and gun deaths will surpass them, but then they state " $2.00 a gallon gasoline will result in an additional 9000 deaths a year." Hmmmmm....

See for yourself: This article was originally published at America's Top Killing Machine - The Atlantic

although many suicides are committed with guns the question is how many of those would have committed suicide in a different manner if a gun had not been available and still be dead. That alone skews any such comparison.

I'm all for ridding myself of all those useless defensive handguns, but first ...

- Every self righteous celebrity, politician, and sundry starlet must immediately divest themselves of armed security details.

- Every bad guy must turn his offensive handgun into LEO for destruction.

- I am granted a national CCW for a Kalashnikov.

Just a "grain" of salt? Geez, I need the whole shaker of salt while reading the politics section(s) of The Rifleman each month. The NRA leadership is so far "Right" that they themselves are going to destroy our rights to keep and bear arms. "Gun Rights" is NOT the sole purview of just ONE political party, and until the NRA leadership actually "gets" that fact they will continue alienating folks opinions about the 2nd Amendment and thus jeopardizing ALL of our "gun rights" in the process. :(

My thoughts exactly.

Number of deaths in 2011 according to the CDC;

Suicide by firearm: 19,766
Homicide by firearm: 11,101
Accidental death by firearm: 851

You can google it all day long :)

Now calculate that as a percentage of something...330 Million people in the U.S....250+ million firearms...etc.

Studies show...... a lot of things. Sometimes they show any number of things that may be harmful to your health. Guns no doubt are the cause of many deaths in this country. Most of of those are suicides.

To put this in perspective there are about 12,000 deaths in the US each year from unnecessary surgeries or about the same number of homicides by firearms.

So, are we getting all worked up over unnecessary surgery. No, we aren't and the media isn't going to build it up because everyone is really ho hum about it just like heart disease.

I don't read articles that try to make a case for gun control because I know where it falls in the general scheme of things.

Yep, the educated elite would love to have us believe only trained LEO or military should own/carry guns for SD. Looking at all the stupid things LEO do with guns, how poor the avg LEO shoots, I trust a trained & skilled civ more around me than the avg LEO. Violent crime drops every year while gun ownership AND CCW increase. I am pretty sure there is a direct correlation between the two.
