With regards to bullets heavier than 300 grains I would suggest 4227, when you start get this heavy it is not about max velocity.

With the 350gr I would start with 4198 even in your barrel length, if it to dirty then go 4227.

I use 4198 with good results above 340 grain with my 460s though dont recall if I shoot any through the shorter barrels.

I will tell you the heavier bullets do have substantially more muzzle flip than lighter bullets compared out of shorter barrels.

For lead I like Beartooth bullets stuff- consistant

Was hoping you all would bring in the missing pieces to loading the 3.5” 460..... then nothing would be missing for those that follow and I can change my name to “oneraggedhole”.

Sorry about that - I was thrown off by the first couple of lines in post #1 - they implied some context from another chat/post maybe?

Anyways - I took the "twins" (460S&W XVR (scoped), 500 S&W and the red-headed step-child (DE)) out today. Pic attached.
I am a firm advocate of that you need to reload if you want to do the big bores (44Mag and up)justice.

I have shot 80 to 100 Hornady #9152 - in my 460 XVR. No issues at all. Now, I will say that I purchased my XVR 7 or 8 years ago. My 500 is only couple of years old. I do feel the quality of the 500 is not quite on par with the 460. Meaning, I have had to tighten screws several times on the 500 - never on the 460. And, I have pushed some warm-hot loads through the 460. Not so much heat with the 500.
The finish on the 460 is better than the 500.

Powders:
I like H110 in the 460 under 240gr XTP/MAGs. I prefer the 240gr over the 300 XTP/MAG.
In the 500 I like Sierra 350gr JHP &400gr JSP over AA#9.
The DE in 50AE - 300gr, H110 is best, in 44 Mag 300gr, AA#9 works best. The DE is finicky at best, these powders work best for me.

I never shoot 454 Casull or 45 Colt out of my XVR, full house 460s will have an extraction issue with build up from shorter cartridges. Maybe find a powder than does not require a full (or close to full) case capacity and go from there. And, reload.

The 460 3.5” has issues and Smith said return it and don’t use #9152 again so I might not keep the 3.5”.... link below.
I know we’ll have at least one 460 Smith... 5” vs 8.38” ???

When the 500 came out I hoped for a 45 caliber and I finally have the need and time.
I have a box of the 300xtp mags.... just need a working gun.
Will get some leads as discussed in the two threads.

I doubt the specific bullets are your issue. You are doing the right thing sending it back to S&W. Seemingly even PC quality is degrading these days. Sad news indeed.

Both the 460 and 500 can really open up with longer barrels = more velocity.

What is it exactly you want to do with your 460?
Your other link talks about:
