My childhood best friend called sometime back to say he wanted to drive to Monroe, LA but thought it too far to do by himself in one day. His son had just moved there from a bit further North in MS. I volunteered that I was not busy and would be happy to ride along. We left last Wednesday and got to Memphis mid afternoon. While looking for Beale St we found Sun Records and spent time there. They directed us to Beale and we also spent time there and heard some fine music. We drove a bit South to a Drury Inn where we met Burt (Tennexplorer). The Memphis bar b que company was across the street and we had an excellent meal. I had just seen this place featured on the Food Channel not long ago.
On Thursday, we headed down Rt 61, the Blues Highway. We stopped at the museum in Clarksdale and it was impressive. The number of blues and rock and roll singers who have come out of that area is staggering. We also stopped at the museum in Leland. We made it to Monroe that afternoon.
Friday we toured the battlefield at Vicksburg and it was an impressive day to say the least. We ended the day with numerous pounds of crawdads.
Saturday, I had lunch with a cousin I had not seen in 50 years. We had a nice visit and we each caught up on the other's families.
Sunday, we headed home. It was a great few days and I learned some more history and geography. I hope we can do it again one day.
