Looked at a 10-10 today with a black finish which was in excellent condition, but the black hammer and trigger threw me off. First thought was that it was reblued but it had a waxy feel, almost like Teflon. It sported what I think were Hogue wood combat grips. I started out thinking I'd pass but the grips are about $75 and the finish had to be about $200. I offered $375 OTD on a price of $425, He turned it down. Should I increase the offer or just stop going to gun shops.

I worry about guns like that. Was that finish applied to distract the next purchaser from detecting something wrong internally? As to the pricing and reluctance to deal, there are a lot of optimists out there... The best (or worst) excuse I've heard is, "Because that's what I paid for it."

The finish sounds more like -$200 than $200. There are very few refinishes that add value. Ford's, Turnbull, sure...beyond that it's probably not adding value. This sounds like some weird bake-on finish. A $250 gun to me.

May I add, Model 10s when new were not bought as a collector item. They were "working guns," bought for a purpose, such as by a police officer, security guard, home defense, etc. They tended to get used, and one that's been refinished in such a way that the use is camouflaged (as opposed to what you hear so often on this forum - "honest wear") is not something worth putting a premium on like you would on a "sock drawer gun" that doesn't have a turn line. Something with a finish like Cerakote, hard chrome, etc., has its place as a gun that'll continue in a working role where it might get some abuse or wear, but I wouldn't pay anything extra for it. In my own experience, I had several guns Armoloyed back in the good old days, but when I traded or sold them, I never expected the refinish to add value and priced them accordingly. It wasn't about being fair, but being honest about what I was presenting. Not at all saying that OP's dealer is dishonest, but it doesn't sound like he's being realistic about what he's got.
