Follower color is a code for which "generation" the mag is. Just like how Glock puts a number on their followes, S&W uses colors.

For instance, the mags that came with my M&P had gray followers, but the add'l mags I picked up a year or so later had orange followers. I've no idea what color they have in the current ones.

I just bought 4 new 10mm magazines direct from Smith & Wesson. Two came with white followers and two came with black. The pistol, 1990 vintage, has yellow. I had asked an S & W Customer Service Rep once if I could purchase yellow followers for my 4506. He told me that they were all black now.

The color of the followers have been used to indicate caliber in some models, as well as the revision of the follower design within the caliber in some models. It can be a bit confusing and inconsistent at times (much like their model numbers, at times ;) ).

For example, there are orange, black, white, red and grey 9mm followers in different models.

The SW99/990L followers for .40 were orange, but there was at least one revision which could be identified only by looking at the physical differences since the color remained the same.

The M&P .40 & .45 followers are both black.

Yellow has been used in at least a couple of different models/calibers at various times.

For the 5903, 5904, 5906 the orange follower allows a 15 round capacity and the black follower allows 14 rounds.

I have 2 different versions of the orange 59XX followers out at my bench, too, as there was at least one revision. Naturally, the orange color changed slightly from one version to the next.

I know I have seen two different versions of the yellow 10mm followers, and only one version of the white. One has a little notch cut out of the top edge of the follower and the other ones are flat with a sharp edge. I have also seen that most new mag followers for the 4006 are blue instead of yellow. Basically the way I do it is use the ones that work best in my gun. If all of the different colors work, that is fine too.
