dillon 550b problem

Not a bashing post here....was in the middle of a 2000 round run of .38 spl's and the square nylon bushing in the powder measure broke....didn't want to wait until Monday to order some from Dillon...( they have always been fantastic!)

So....what do I have that I can improvise to finish the run....I looked on my tool box and to my surprise I found a square nut that fit the groove and was thin enough that I didn't have to dress it down.

The threaded hole was too small to fit the post on the arm , so I grabbed my calipers and measured it and found a drill bit that was ever so slightly larger than the post and enlarged the hole to fit.

I think I like the fit of the nut even better than the nylon bushing and I know it will not break...So far it moves very smoothly and I finished my run as well.

Might work for any of you that have the same problem.........

I have had the same problem. I bought the parts kit for my 450/550 so that when those mishaps occur in the middle of a batch, I'm not shut down until parts arrive. Your home made steel/iron replacement is a great temporary idea but the nylon part is self lubricating the steel one may gaul your aluminum powder bar. You'll want to get a nylon one in there before you need a non-warranty repair. Ivan

Are we talking about the bellcrank cube? I was looking at this just the other day when I converted my powder bar from rifle to pistol. I was wondering if there's a reason it was made of plastic. I concluded they made it like this for a reason which is NOT to save a penny or two. As mentioned above, probably to prevent wear. Mine never broke. Yet.

Ivan hit the nail on the head. While on the phone with Dillon getting the part under warranty go ahead and order a parts kit.

I will change it out when I can get a replacement from Dillon. In anticipation of a galling problem, I did put some Tetragun grease on the sides and back of the nut so that it would have some lube.

Been on hold with Dillon for quite awhile this morning....am presently number 22 in line......

I believe Dillon refers to this part as Derlin, and the one on my 550 is 25+ years old and still going strong.

That's an upgrade available on the 650 & 1050.

After nearly an hour on hold I got to speak to a real person!! They are sending me 2 of them...1 for the install and 1 for a backup....they did think my solution was a good one, especially where I lubed it with Teragun...another solution would be the same idea using a brass nut instead of the steel one.....

So far, my improvised solution is running well and showing NO signs of wearing on anything as I think there is enough free play in the tolerances to prevent any binding.

Prof. Fate has a problem? Who knew?
