dillon 550b question

I had the same problem and it was cured by Dillon sending me a new small primer slide bar....problem disappeared for another 100,000 rounds or so! Viva Dillon's No BS Warranty.......

I'm confused how would a dirty primer cup and spring prevent the primer bar from moving all the way to the rear?

Not so much it being dirty causing it,but if you do not get it seated down all the way it will catch on the plastic tip on the primer tube.

I have had this happen in the past also. Usually a cleaning is all that is needed.
However during a separation, divorce and the aftermath I did not load anything for about 4 years. Shortly after getting my bench and loader set up I had this happen again. All the cleaning, adjusting and changing the tip on the primer tube still had the problem. Inside the housing is a small plastic plunger under tension from the flat spring on the outside of the housing. The primer cup bears against this at the end of its travel as it picks up a primer.
During my hiatus from loading a spider or something took up residence and spun a little web in there. This prevented full travel of the plunger which in turn prevented the primer slide from full travel.

Thanks for all the replys. I ordered another small primer slide and the rod that pushes the primer slide back to pick up the primer from Dillon. After installing them the problem has stopped and the slide is functioning normally again.

Before you go changing and grinding, remove the primer bar assembly and clean it thoroughly. I have had bits and pieces of primers get behind the cup and act just as you described. Then lube lightly with dry lube and install it again. Chances are that will do the trick.

Sorry, I only saw the first page. Glad your problem is solved. Nothing like Dillon customer service!

I have a different model Dillon, but when I switched from Winchester to Federal primers I had a similar problem. After a good cleaning I found that I still needed to make an adjustment using the small Allen screws. A call to Dillon's customer service department was all that was necessary to assist me in doing this. Give them a shout.
