Dirty Harry made the Model 29 .44 Magnum famous in the 1970s.

I carried a Model 29 4" in 1963 as a service revolver.
(purchased from Kleins Sporting Goods -Chicago, Ill.-mail order).
Over the 45 years career I carried a number of other service revolvers /autos but always came back to the Model 29.

Just curious what was your normal carry load, full power or reduced.

I carried my 4'' 29 concealed for a couple months just to try it out and loaded it with 44 special type loads!

He used the line about the 44 mag being the most powerful in 2 of the movies.

I carried a four inch 29 when I was working in the protection field .I use to carry Remington's reduced load soft flat nose, along with three speed loaders of 180 gr JHP's

First two chambers- .44Special 246 grain LRN
other four chambers- .44 Magnum JSP

These factory loads were from the local Hardware Store located in a small mining town.

Yowza! Klein's brings back a lot of memories from Chicago when it wasn't an anti gun cesspool. Just about every cps had a rifle range in it for the rotc cadets. 100 yard rifle range in Soldier Field. Trap shooting in Lincoln Park GC over the lake. As well as Whiting GC.

What happened to that once wonderful city? I wandered around in that store for hours as a kid.

Love allah the Nframes, but preferred the 6" flavors the best!

Regards, Rick Gibbs

I carried a 4" 629 as my service revolver loaded with Federal 185 grain JHP's. It was a beast I could shoot it pretty well for about 10-12 shots then I would start anticipating recoil. Switched to a 1911 and never looked back

Likely my favorite Smith.....
Edges out the model 19.(barely)

The late Eldon Carl (second from the left in the picture below) carried a Model 29 on duty when he was with the El Cajon, California, PD. I was in high school at the time and knew him well. My older brother used to assist him in his shooting demonstrations in supermarket parking lots.

Can anyone here name the other men in the photo?

Walter, I agree.

Jack Weaver (the Weaver Stance) passed quite awhile ago I believe. Jeff Cooper has passed. Anyone know about the others?

With John Plähn they were the six Combat Masters, (Reed had the quickest draw), so called because they would almost always take the first six places in Jeff Cooper's Big Bear "Leatherslaps" shooting competitions at Big Bear Lake, California. The Leatherslaps became the "South Western Combat Pistol League" or "SWCPL".
