can anyone tell me if a 29 no dash with serial number starting with s186xxx could have come in a wood box?

Yes, it would have have, unless it was one of the very first ones issued. Those came in a black or dark blue hinged box.

I am pretty all sure Model 29s thereafter came in a mahogany presentation case until sometime in the early 80s when they were discontinued as standard equipment. After that time, Model 29s were shipped in the one-piece folding cardboard box. The presentation case may have still been available as an option for awhile, I do believe.
