Disappointment and then great happiness,

Thanks for the info and good chuckles gents. I'll definately send a note to Lew Horton.

I'm eager to shoot it, but so far, I can't find any ammo locally, I'll mail order some shortly.

As to owing my mother-in-law a lunch or somthing, I think I work on her house enough to call it even :)

Well, that is certainly a great deal on that gun. Maybe those black-rifle shops are the place to look for S&Ws... ? Congratulations! :)

I had one of those with the ports. Though I liked the basic idea of the gun (i.e., a 5-shot L-frame 44 Special), the ports were just not something I could put up with. Hamilton Bowen suggested fitting a rebored Mountain Gun barrel, which both took care of the porting problem and gave me a 4-inch barrel with the standard profile that I prefer. Not only is it a handy little gun, it is a terrific shooter.

Don't forget to keep the barrel clean, particularly if you are using plain lead bullets. The barrel shank is very thin and they do not need any extra stress in that area.

Clean it up?? I don't see anything you need to improve. Very handsome gun. And at the risk of being repetitious, a great buy. Don

Professor Frink, a fairly good chance. The Bowen-revamped 696...

my mother-in-law was visiting so I decided to stop on in.

feralmerril,

+1! :D With an opening line like that I thought the professor would be asking us for bail money, the name of a good lawyer, etc., etc.

Professor Frink,

Congrats on a great find. I'm hoping your mojo rubs off on some of us here.

Chris

VERY nice purchase.

I too have found out that the "black-n-polymer" gunshops are the places to go for deals on older weapons...sometimes.

Sometimes they just look in the "Bluebook" and ramp the price up though. Sometimes the "Bluebook" is below what S&Ws are currrently going for too.
