Do you modify your firearm? why or why not?

I've found the best trigger job you can do is to practice shooting with a Double Action revolver. Because once you master a 10 lbs. DA revolver trigger you'll be able to shoot any kind of trigger very well.

As for Night Sights, they are IMO nearly worthless. Yeah, you can see the sights in near total darkness. However if you are shooting in those conditions it's pretty likely you won't be able to see what you are shooting at. In addition I have yet to see night sights that are as visible in the rather subdued lighting at an indoor shooting range as sights that feature big white dots like those on my Ruger SR1911.

Personally I would advise anyone wanting to become a finer shot spend their money on a small reloading setup. Because by reloading you can just about double the rounds per dollar spend on ammunition and that means you can put more rounds downrange.

Modify it only if you know how.
But you'll never know how until you do it.

As for the whole 'them S&W geniuses made things the way they ought to be' perspective, that's hardly the case with any product from any company. Engineers design, accounting cuts corners, engineers redesign, mass manufacturing introduces tolerance issues not seen on the engineer's plans, you get a product that is hardly a precise realization of the engineers' perfect conceptualization.

Every mass produced product is compromised, every product can be improved. Hell, some companies intentionally under-engineer products just to give themselves room to 'improve' in the next model or to differentiate product lines.

Couldn't agree more! Engineering is a series of compromises dictated by the desires of Marketing, Accounting, Manufacturing, Legal etc. etc..
If the final product happens to suite me exactly, it's pure chance and not likely the result of any well executed master plan!
To "modify" to correct/change any of those compromises to my individual needs/desires is perfectly acceptable as long as safety and quality considerations are upheld.

My thoughts are the firearm was engineered to function a certain way with countless hours and financial resources dedicated to R&D.

It was also designed to have broad appeal to as many buyers as possible. Nothing wrong with tailoring it to your tastes/needs.

I've modified one pistol; the M&P 22 compact. Changed the mag release button from a righty to a lefty.

Very glad I did.

Hey all!

So, im fairly new to the gun world, i purchased an m&p 22 full size, will be used mostly for practice and wanted something around the house in case, also, my wife can handle it so if shes alone we both feel better. i feel no need to modify this weapon as we are both newbies and haven't reached a point where we desire certain attributes yet, the one thing i would like to do is modify the magazine to hold more, it holds 12 but I've seen mods to allow 15, having trouble locating kit online though, so if you know where i can find i would appreciate. I know with the 10 rnd mag you can simply remove little piece at bottom and get 2 more rnds, i also understand you lose some function on the slide but that doesnt bother me, rather have the few more rnds.

Welcome to the forum. Nice thing about this forum is someone will be along soon and answer your question. I remember reading about it but not where; it is a simple process but I can't remember the name of the company.

I've had my latest 640-3 a little over a month and I Love it. I put some Pac rubber 3 finger grips. I also took a touch up bottle of automobile flat black paint to black out the rear sights. No issue with Hoppes#9 taking the paint off. Just mask it well and put 3-4 light coats. Also, if you want a colored front sight, no problem, under $4.00. How?? Go to the hardware store and buy a roll of Original Duck Tape(don't buy cheap tape or other types of tape or think that any other tape will hold. It won't. I tried) is any color you want. Cut a small piece the same size as an insert and lay it across the front sight. It will hold tight if you pinch it into place and smooth it out on the sight. Also it has no problem with Rem Oil or Hoppes#9 taking it off.

I lube all my trigger Sears with moly because it makes all the trigger let off feel close to each other. I can switch calibers/guns and can expect the same trigger feel. It makes me more accurate between the different calibers.

Grips I tend to change the grips on certain guns because the orginal grips don't fit my hands. S&W is actually the only revolver I find that fits my hand in most cases.

If you travel back a few decades modifications were necessary for competitions like IPSC. So, I had some basic modifications done on a Series 70 and 629-1 to suit my needs. The Colt serves as my CC today.
Although I haven't done any altering since, I would not hesitate to do it again. Depends on the firearms' historical vs functional appeal as I see it. Resale value is only a minor consideration, if at all.

Nope, I don't modify mine at all.

:D:rolleyes:

You got one of those slide rackers on that gun I mentioned in another post and caught a bunch of flack for using one.

It's a matter of necessity, with that C-More optic, I can't grab the slide firmly enough to make for secure racking. (plus it makes "table starts" easier)

I went crazy one night and put a Talon grip on my Shield. I made sure the doors were all locked, and had all the lights off except one 60 watt bulb, in an interior room with that door locked!

Yes!! Mod it, I have a hard time not improving the firearm to enhance fit & function. My 9 has stippling, night sights, trigger work & top serrations. I'm very happy with it and wouldn't hesitate to put it up against anything else I have to defend myself and my family.

That being said, I haven't changed anything on my 45 Shield, yet, but I am already considering trijicon night sights.

My new .45 Shield will arrive at my FFL dealer tomorrow and I'm already thinking of an Apex trigger kit.

My MP might someday have to be used for defense. It is definitely going to be used to punch holes in paper. Therefore, it is primarily a target gun. The trigger mods help me get better groups. I keep the old parts, and if there is a problem, they are not that hard to replace. If I have to use it for self defense, and a lawyer attacks me for modifying the gun, that means I won, am still alive, and don't care a lot about the rest.

Apex trigger mods make the M&P's a better gun. As I see it, the only legal issue with trigger mods is in the event of an accidental discharge causing injury or damage.
