Do you pre-judge new folks here?

I have noticed that I tend to think of new, or newer members as being younger people who have less experience than most of the other long time members here. I don't know why my brain thinks this way.

I always picture a young (early 20s) kind of person. I know that this is an inaccurate portrayal, as I soon find out that the "new" guy is a grandfather who has served for 30 years in the armed services, or is a middle aged guy who has a ton of firearm experience, but has just never gotten into revolvers or S&Ws in general.

It is very hard sometimes to know who a person really is based on how they present themselves in their posts. I get surprised a lot when people post pictures of themselves.

What image comes to your mind of the person who posts, "Hi, I'm new here, can anybody tell me....." ?

I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, especially new folks. Just because someone has thousands of posts, that doesn't mean he is an expert on guns or is even very smart. Conversely, a new poster may be a real plus to the Forum.

I do get tired of seeing someone with a dozen or so posts coming in and telling us how the Forum should be run, however. Or obvious "manure stirring" provocative troll-like posts...

Yes and no. I see on my profile that I have less than 4 years here. I must of had to rejoin once on a computer fluke as I thought it was about 7. Anyway, I am 68 years old in april. That means I found this place after I was 60, and I have been into smith and wessons heavy since about 1970.
I have zip against any newby as every one of us have been one.
If anything, I kind of always got a private kick out of seeing the types that get into something like guns or flying and harleys, soon get to be know it alls, wearing logos on caps, shirts etc, trying to look like pro`s.
Sure hope I didnt act that way when I started out on guns, flying and harleys 50 years ago!

The only time I think about this issue is in the Classifieds - I think long and hard in buying a gun from some one with only and handful of posts, especially if no picture is offered or the descriptions are questionable.

I don't mean pre-judging in a bad way, as in thinking anything negative about a new poster. I mean, do any of you automatically imagine a particular age, background, or visual of people who post here? Especially newcomers.

I don't judge new folks here. Although in person a first impression goes along way with me. Anyhow, I, like mentioned above by another poster don't really like when someones first post is a gun for sale in the classifieds, or complains about how the forum is ran or a bad experience with S&W....

We all were new once. I still am. I have a high post count but that's because I have no life and I sit around the computer more than others.

Has the idea of a posting minimum be in place before putting an AD in the classifieds been kicked around? I know the paying thing has, which I have no problem with. Just a thought.

I'm a relative newbie here but I've been into guns since I was a kid. That being said, as my boss would say "I know enough to know I don't know nothing." What he means is no matter how much you know you can always learn something new. I tend to lurk before I join a forum to see how it flows. SO many of you men and women know WAY more than I do so it's just nice to pick up things from those of you who are very knowledgeable.

The people I pre-judge are the ones that spout off. Doesn't matter if they're brand new or years in, if you have a know it all attitude THAT'S when I judge you.

Actually, "L-bow" is an asphalt technician in this area . . . and one of the fixtures in this area's "Redneck Olympics," held every summer in East Dublin, GA since about 1996 as a take-off on the '96 Olympics held "up the road" in Atlanta.

I've met this guy, and when he goes into his "impression," he's hilarious!

You do NOT have to look like an inbred to attend the Redneck Olympics . . . but it doesn't hurt!

BTW . . . most of 'em around here have been shooting since they were young, so don't let the looks of the locals make ya think they don't know what they are doing. Many a yankee has been "taken" by a "dumb-lookin' redneck!"

I try not to, sometimes though things do get in the way. I try to remember that there was a man who was in his fifties who didn't know me from Adam took the time and with a 19 year old kid who asked alot of questions about guns, ammo, and reloading and spent 7 years on him. This man ws a friend of mine, who had a family, had other things, but was really never too busy. So when I get new questions, I try to remember that someone spent the time with me.

I sometimes find myself pre-judging after reading one post from a member but after reading several of their posts they seem to fit right in. I was looking for info on two S&W pistols that I had bought in the early '90's. I wasn't looking to join a forum but after lurking here I joined. I always thought it was a younger crowd but then there was an age poll a while ago that showed the majority of posters to be around 50 years or more. My son-in-laws and grandkids motivate me to go shooting with them and I learn enough from these forums to somewhat keep up with them. I have always been impressed by the range of knowledge/experiences of the posters from novices to the expert to the academic historian that post here.

Andy, I have always pictured you wearing a white suit like a true southern country lawyer.

I try not to judge someone new by one or two posts. However, after three or five or more posts that become argumentative, I start to ignore the rest of their posts.
