I heard an expression on TV a few days ago that I had not
heard for a long time. "Hunky Dory". I remember my Dad
using that expression many years ago. It means something
is all good.

Caused me to start remembering some other old phrases I
recall my Dad using. Doozy comes to mind. If something
was outstanding it was a "Doozy". I think it might have started
with the Duesenberg automobile which was the ultimate auto
at the time.

The most important person in the company or group was called
the "Big Cheese".

If a girl or woman was very attractive they were referred to
as a "Looker".

If something was admired it was called the "Cat's Meow".

Something very cool was referred to as "Swanky".

If someone was wrong he, or she, was "All Wet".

If you, like I, are kinda old, you can probably add some
old time slang to this list, and/or correct my spelling.

Peachy keen, meaning hunky dory, is one.:)

My dad had a unique exclamation to describe enthusiastic anticipation: Hot gobber!

(Sounds sorta disgusting, right? Gobber? WTH is that?)

Never heard it or seen it anywhere else, other than my own occasional usage now with my siblings or my children. (Hey, gotta keep the tradition going.)

You know I hadn’t even noticed but we are becoming a society that uses them emogies things rather than words to express ourselves .
I can remember my dad saying things like that also.He was a pretty colorful character.Calling someone a “peckerwood” if they were incompetent was one he used ..Son don’t take your car to that peckerwood here’s the name of a real mechanic .Man I miss his advice and wisdom. Slow leak was another. That buddy of your is a little of a slow leak isn’t he son .I guess to him all us fellas were slow leaks lol.

“A blast from the pass” - still not sure what that’s supposed to mean.

Blast from the past ,that’s like a great old song you don’t hear on the radio anymore cause it’s out of style but you hear it and it brings back memories..Elvis singing I can’t help falling in love ,comes to my mind cause it was playing on Kelly Casey’s AM radio when she gave me my first kiss on her dads porch swing .Loved Elvis ever since lol. Kelly to but she was a year older than me and married some guy in the air force .

If you REALLY want some COOL AMERICANA LINGO...... Watch the Maltese Falcon or most of the old Bogie Movies from the 30's and 40's. I like that era even though it's way before my time!

When I was a kid, I loved some of the expressions my Grand Dad would use. remember when "Balling" meant to cry or "get over on you" meant to cheat someone out of something?
