Do you talk to your dog?

I think there is a substantial amount of recent research that indicates that animals understand verbal communication, and specific words, far more than we think.

So this would imply that they must have a higher order of intelligence than we previously thought.

And a developed intelligence would lead you to assume that they had.........
Souls?

Of course, as dog (and cat) owners, we already knew this.

Yes I talk to my dog and sing to her as she cocks her head desperately hanging on every word.

Maybe she's just trying to tune out your singing? I can't sing so don't even try to.

talk to my GSD all the time .. she lays with her head on my foot while I play on the computer .. but I'm retired home alone during the day and Eko and I have had some very interesting conversations these past 2 years .. she's only 2 .. her views are quite interesting ..

My Border Collie was pretty smart, the 2 words she never seemed to understand were "Come" and "No". When you told her "No" she would turn her head and not make eye contact with you, just like a stubborn kid.

Perhaps an under-statement. You might say they are forgiving, but in truth I think their innate "humanity" (for lack of a better word) goes far beyond just being forgiving.

As many of you may know from other dog threads that I have responded to, I am in to my current furry child almost $10,000. She came to us, supposedly after a vet check up on the other end, with giardia. Shortly after that was cured, she went into the doggy hospital for a spaying. The next issue we discovered was auto immune disease that resulted in her second hospital stay. She is now on prednisone every day. A few months later, she suffered a stomach flip that required surgery and a third hospital stay and her stomach was stitched to her abdominal wall in an effort to prevent a future occurrence. Apparently, deep chested dogs are prone to this condition. The stomach flips over on itself which restricts blood flow to the liver and kidneys and death can occur in hours.

I had friends, even some dog owners, that suggested that a bullet would have been cheaper.

Do I talk to her, you bet, every day and every day I thank the Lord that he allowed her to stay with me. If you look up "unconditional love" in the dictionary, it should just say DOG.

Of course I talk to My dog all the time. Did anyone ever notice that when You talk to Your dog they look You right in the eye. My vet said that's why dogs and humans are common companions. My dog would rather go for a ride or walk than eat. I simply rattle the keys and She's out the doggy door and waiting at the truck. When I leave her home for a gun show or a shoot she gives Me the did You win/ where's the gun look. Most of the time I prefer to talk to her than most people.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that has multiple names for my dog (ok, it's my wife's dog). Her name is Lucy, but I use

and probably a few more, she still knows that I'm talking to her, and doesn't seem to mind the non-feminine name calling a bit.

My dog is the same way. In fact every dog I have ever had loved to go out to walk or play or to ride in my truck. I keep reading about people with dogs that get car sick or are afraid of riding in a car or truck, but I have never seen that in any dog. When I head for the door and say let's go outside she starts spinning and bouncing as her way of saying yes I want to go too!

I've always talked to my dogs . I thought that everybody did and from reading all the comments on this thread it looks as though I was right.
Unfortunately, I talked to my canine friend and companion of 14 years for the last time at 5 am last Sunday morning. It had been getting hard for him to get around for the last few weeks. The wife and I had to go out of town for a couple of days and when we got back he wasn't doing very well at all. It seems as though he was just waiting for us to come back home. We knew that he didn't have much longer so we sat on the sofa with him until he peacefully passed away about an hour later. That was one of the hardest things I've had to go through in quite awhile.

My deepest sympathies. I will be in your shoes in the not too distant future x2. Caesar tried to get my wife to let him out this am, she was In the shower, he couldn't hold it until he got to my mancave & had an accident, then he came to me ashamed/embarrassed/guilty, because he knew he did something wrong. I told him it was our fault, not his, & that he was the best dog in the world. The female Cassie on the other hand would look you in the eye while doing it and say "hey watch this". He punishes himself, she is an entirely different situation. Hard to believe they are littermates, I love her as much.

Seems to me I saw a TV documentary couple of years ago, about a Border Collie who could retrieve a particular object by name, type, size, in a pile, in another room. For example,
"fetch the small bear", or "fetch the large rubber squeeky toy".
Anyone else remember that?
