DOB 27-2 ?

Just acquired a 27-2 that looks to be un-fired.
Wondering when it was made ... DOB ?
Serial # is N9649XX

Interesting number there. The SCSW lists the highest range for N prefix numbers as being 97XXXX and dated to around 1986. It also lists the 27-3 model as beginning in 1982. This illustrates how much variability there is in ship dates and serial number ranges between the various dash models. My own model 27-2 is number N942XXX and it is a transitional model with a recessed cylinder but unpinned barrel. Just curious, but is yours pinned and recessed?

Yes, mine is both Pinned and recessed. Guessing from what you said, the DOB on mine is probably around 1984-1985 ?

I think the only way to narrow the date to any more than from 1980-86 is to buy have the gun lettered for a ship date. Here we have two 27-2 revolvers, mine with an earlier serial number but unpinned barrel ala -3 and yours with a later ss# but pinned and recessed as a true 27-2 should be. S&W obviously made and stamped frames as they were produced but did not pull them out of stock in any order. Mine was almost surly assembled and shipped later than yours, regardless of having an earlier SS#.
