Thanks for the manufacture year. I guess I was misinformed about the ship date. It has been my understanding that S&W did not document a S/N by build date but logged it into the records when it was shipped as part of an order leaving storage. Some S/N supposedly lay in storage for months or even years waiting to be logged and shipped. Seems a difference of opinion about documentation dating. This particular gun was sold new in 1987, I have the sales ticket, so by that, it sat somewhere for 6 years. I'm confused, I guess.

Actually you can send a post to Roy Jinks at S&W and he can get you a ship date for free without the letter. If you watch on the forum you will see several people who do so on a daily basis. I think you may have to be a member of the S&W Collectors Association to do so. You can then have access to the Members Forum here.

You are right, though about the factory shipping out guns not in any semblance of what we would consider order.
