Scored a nice clean P+R 629 no dash 6" N8702xx at the Phoenix Crossroads show on Saturday. I'm guessing 1981? What is the highest known N-prefix 629? When did the N-prefix switch to three-letter prefix? UPDATE: Roy confirmed October 1981 ship date.

The highest 629 I have in my database is N882267 Oct 1981 and the first 629-1 I have is N893960 Feb 1982. The highest N prefix I have is N959256.
This is the information you asked for, but it is of no practical use! S&W did not ship in any resemblance of numerical order! This fact is obvious when looking at any database that is listed in serial number numerical order. I have numbers that are 3+ years past any numbers close to it! Here is an example!
N878305 57-1 May-83
N878506 57 P&R Transistion Jan-82
N878510 57 P&R Transistion Oct-81
N878521 57 P&R Transistion Feb-84

JCELECT,

I have N871XXX which is a 6291 model (no dash between the 9 and the 1) pinned, but not recessed, 6”.

This is another example of the spread that sometimes exists in the serial number order! Sir, your gun is what is referred to as a "transition gun"! This is what happens in the manufacturing process when using up all the older parts after an engineering change has been implemented.

I have a 4 inch 629 No Dash currently on the road being shipped to my FFL to hopefully pick up on Tuesday or Wednesday

I bought all three barrel lengths this past winter.
All NIB
Some dumb reason I kept the 8 3/8's thinking this
configuration was the least produced.

That said....all three came with S&W letters.
IIRC they gave a good break down of no dash 629
production.
Very narrow window of production for P&R ND 629's.
I will post a copy next week.

Very interested in seeing your letter, I’m thinking it would be a great addition here and to the thread I linked in post 7 above
If you have the time, I’d greatly appreciate it
Thanks
