I have a Model 37 Airweight .38 Special CTG. First off what does CTG. stand for?

And can anyone help me with the DOB? Serial number is J852XXX

I saw this is in a post on a different gunsite only a few minutes ago (no lie!), and I can't take any credit for coming up with it.

"Actually, it means Totally Cool Gun (TCG) but apparently the guy stamping the barrels at S&W is dyslexic and marked them CTG by mistake. We made up the story about CTG meaning cartridge because we don't want to hurt the guy's feelings."

I feel slightly dumb not knowing that ctg. means cartridge. Oh well, no dumb questions right?! Thanks for the DOB. Where does everyone find the date of manufacture listings? Online? A S&W book?

the standard catalog of smith and wesson is available at barnes and noble, books-a-million, amazon, or ebay. it is very helpful with all things s&w. it narrows dob down on most stuff. lots of members, here on the forum have actually "lettered" their guns with the s&w factory, and have actual ship-dates, so a little patience, and several helpful members, can sometimes narrow it down even more.

with that being said, s&w was notorious for not necessarily shipping stuff in exact numerical sequence, so inconsistencies are fairly common.

good luck, and welcome to the forum!
