DOB, Model 64 Pencil Barrel

I have a stainless Model 64 (no dash) with a 4" thin barrel and serial number D5812XX.

I'd appreciate any help on DOB any of you guys could give me. My best guess is early 70s.

Is it a 1D prefix? if so your gun is 1979-1980 DOB.

I think, could be wrong, that they are all in the @73-74 range. And when looking at the SCSW, look in the D section of serial numbers. You won't find the 64 listed at the top, but you will find the serial numbers.

Yes, Blair. That's it exactly. Not in pristine condition like those, but it's still decent. I may go ahead and replace the grips, as they've become darkened and somewhat worn. There is some wear on the finish, but nothing too bad. Functionally, it's excellent.

Actually the photo is pretty deceptive. I think the top one is 90% at best, and the bottom one is pretty well worn. In fact the bottom one's so holster worn the barrel is burnished bright instead of the factory satin. Frankly, I was fairly amazed at how good they look in this picture! In fact the bottom gun was so crudded up from what must have been years without cleaning (or lubrication as far as I could tell) the action was almost sized. It was obviously a gun that someone thought was maintenance free because it was "stainless". IOW it must have belonged to a cop. Thank God I have a friend with an ultrasonic, or I'd still be cleaning it today. I'm not much for re-finishing stainless guns (other than cleaning) but if I find someone with a blasting set-up I'd re-bead blast the front sights and leave it at that.

They both look really good now, though. Are those the original grips? Did you do anything to clean 'em up or refinish them?

It's the photo, which is slightly out of focus, having been shot through a wide open lens with anti-shake on. The grips aren't original to the guns (one was wearing rubber when I purchased it) but they are right for the period and model. As for the finish I really didn't do much at all except cleaning. They do show wear & handling scratches on close inspection. The bottom gun was carried and has it's share of nicks and scratches but looks good in the photo partly because it's actually polished from holster wear. Under the sideplate that one was a real mess. The action was almost sized and I was worried that it might have rusted solid or something. The only revolver I ever felt that was worse had actually been lubricated with linseed oil!

Matching box and nice revolver, wow, drooling here in TN. I have a nice clean 64 that many of us do love to refer too as the "pencil barrel" and the heavy one, the "bull barrel", among other pet names. I carried the heavy barrel version a few years as LEO. I sold my 2 inch years ago after leaving the force. I have a Mod. 10 4 inch pencil too. All are great basic guns for range of use. I believe the tapered barrel is a bit easier to conceal or at least for comfort.
