Hi all... Ive been looking at making some mods to a 15-22, but until my FAC comes through (I'm in the UK). I cant get my hands on one... So next best thing, does anyone have a decent CAD model?

What kind of mods are you thinking about doing that need a CAD drawing? Are you allowed to mod in the UK?

Im looking at various integrated stocks to try things like bullpups and stocks to use the space a little better... And a something like a ti sleeve to sit inside the lower so that all pins, etc are resting on metallics, rather than polymer to add logevity. The thing is, in the UK, the 15-22 is the closest thing we can get to a AR... So Im playing with the idea of making one much more like its bigger brother... And seeing as though CAD is free, why not! ;)

And yeah, we can modify anything we like, as long as we dont touch pressure bearing parts. But Theres also nothing to stop you from taking a design and making it so that a stripped 15-22 would slide into it... Much the same as the red jacket modified the 10-22... Not really modifying the gun, just adding more to it. You could add integrated sights, lights, etc...

I wont lie... Its an exercise in wasting time and having fun. But you never know... 3D printing and all that...

Hi NH,

No problem if you're wanting to do some CAD work for fun, but I would disagree with the above statement: if you're looking for something closer to an actual AR, then there are plenty of Spikes Tactical .22 ARs in the UK (not to mention the UK built variants from LanTac, Southern Gun Company, Mark Bradley amongst others). These would give you the 'real-steel' AR in a UK legal .22 semi-auto format.

Also plenty of 5.56/.223 ARs in the UK, albeit in straight-pull configuration (no gas system).

Personally, (and for the price) I'm very happy with the 15-22 and feel that the feature spec, build quality and functionality are far greater than the similarly priced Umarex 'Colt' and 'HK' up-rated airsoft pieces ;)

Ah, sorry... I should have said "semi" in there somewhere... Im not sure im a fan of straightpull... Not that Ive ever shot one, but still...

Ive seen the other .22 AR's but their slightly out of my range for the mo. Its mainly (as you say) to play about with cad and see what could be done. If youre going to experiment, the 15-22 is a good place to start, I recons! ;)

No worries; the 15-22 is a GREAT platform to play around with! Have fun :)

That being said, we have to do we can in the UK; I was a pistol shooter for several years before we had to hand them in, but (travesty of justice notwithstanding) I'm still having a lot of fun with semi .22, .357 & 9mm lever and straight pull .223 & .308 :)

Yeah, I was going to add a .22 semi pistol to my FAC application... I saw a really nice Grand Power K22 that keeps flashing its eyes at me...

The reason Red Jacket gets away with their 10-22 bullpup is because there is a window in the side of the kit which allows the ser# to show through. In the US the 15-22 the lower has the ser# and is "the gun" so changing the lower would be losing the ser#. This is legal to do yourself on your own gun only and cannot be sold or given away. In the UK I have to believe there is a penalty for possessing a firearm without a ser#. Also the fake buffer tube is part of the lower and cannot be removed without cutting it of, which would turns it into a pistol, and also maybe illegal.
If all is good and you still want to play around with it then what version of CAD do you have and also how it it free?

Hiya Rundover... Sorry, been at work....

Yeah, the design I had in mind would keep the lower so thats no issue. And as long as the barrel is over 300mm and the total rifle was above 600mm its perfectly legal. But that would be something to check out before actually making any modifications.

I also didnt explain myself very well with the CAD... Obviously the packages arent free, but using them is. I have access to Solidworks, NX8.0, Creo V2.0 and relitively shortly, Catia V5. I can open any file type I think with that lot. My preference is NX part files. But it can all be converted :)

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but I'd be real cautious about exporting engineering drawings of controlled items like firearms parts. If the physical bits are controlled, odds are producible designs are as well.

Not saying I know facts either way, but just 'be careful out there.' The firewalls have ears!

NH you just need one of these from Lantac

LANTAC:: SUB-RAVEN, ultra short, integrally suppressed semi auto .22LR AR15 Rifle.

One would be full within one's rights to digitize said item into a cad file for personal
non commercial use I would think. Now if you were to do that so you could reverse
engineer it and sell a copy, then you would have issues! :)

I love playing in CAD, sadly there are no existing files that I can find.. And I don't have
a Laser Scanner so I won't be modeling one anytime soon!

To reverse engineer a rifle for sale... yeah, all kinds of hurt. But to use files to create new items... Apple make the phone, but they cant pattent the dimensions, which is why theres companies that run just off the back of it making phone cases... Magpul do it with AR's.

But for now, im simply playing and contemplating. If I have to wait to get one in my hands, so be it :)

I drew up a CAD drawing from my own 15-22 so that I could design by Bullpup. It is not 3D nor is it all views but it is what I needed and it is in Acad 2013.
