Trying for a BALANCE

I'm almost 75 and have experience with friends and relatives who have been vegetarians. I have been able to find ways to blend in with their diet requirements.
I note that all that I currently are close to have modified their diets to include some meat.
My upbringing made me appreciate vegetables and I am completely happy with most meatless meals.

As you get older, you need protein plus more protein just maintain muscle. How many supplements are they taking to get what they need?
If they're taking a lot of protein supplements, how healthy is that and what's the point?

My best friend, Bob, who is now a continent away, living in Oregon (and no, not in the blue areas), still working his self employment full time. He's 78, been meatless for nearly 50 of those years. He, like I, complains about our arthritis, otherwise he is "healthy as a horse" as they say.

Yes, my wife age 77, sadly slipping into dementia, but I wish my body was in as good a shape as hers. She takes only a light med for blood pressure, at 5'-8" has worn size 10 clothes for 30 years, and can still walk 4-5 miles in 1-1/2 hours, talking all the way. We joke that between her body and my mind we make pretty a capable whole person.

Coming from the music industry I rubbed elbows with all types. The vegetarians were generally pleasant folk.

The two groups of people that were the toughest to tolerate were militant animal rights advocates and militant vegans.

Rusty, what is the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan?

Vegans are the "I won't eat or wear anything with animal products" folks. They seem to be angry people. "Hangry" is the word.

My best friend is a vegan. He transitioned from omnivore to vegan over the course of a decade. When he became full grown vegan, he became annoyingly touchy, everything set him off - lecturing me about my diet. In the mean time, he was upset about how expensive and time consuming it was for him to eat! The irony is that he has leather seats in his car! Go figure.

Will be 71 in September. I eat plant based. I used to have high blood pressure, acid reflux ,restless leg syndrome and overweight. I took medicine for everything.Been plant based for a little over two years. Have lost 30 lbs. and never felt better in my life. Not on any of my medicine anymore.

Like SC Mike I'm a meatatarian. Mostly venison. The key to health is exercise and mental stimulation. Protein and calcium are essential. Extreme diets of any kind are not good…… side note, we met some friends for dinner a couple weeks ago. Just for giggles I ordered the impossible burger. The waitress says the fries are deep fried in oil is that ok. I laughed and said yes I'm not a vegan I'm just experimenting tonight. Must have been the bourbon. Burger wasn't bad texture wise but lacked flavor.
