Hi,

in May I got a 624 4" and although I immediately liked it (being a die hard fan of the N-frame anyway), I considered having it roundbutted. I was reluctant because I have a 27-3 and like the square butt with decent stocks for target shooting, but the 624 is intended as a carry gun when hunting, so I thought a smaller stock would be more convenient with the gun in a holster - but wasn't sure if the handling when shooting would be as comfortable as with the square butt (I regularly shoot my wife's 696 which has the Ahrends retro banana on and I like it, although I have large hands and the L-frame feels like a small gun when you are accustomed to a N-frame). After some time of consideration (to to or not to do), I eventually ordered my preferred gunsmith to alter the grip frame to round butt.
Have been to the range twice now, and I think my decision was a good one. Even with stout loads, the gun feels very comfortable, and I guess recoil might be better managed due to more contact surface with the palm and better muscle tension of the fingers.
It is surely no collectible any more, but this gun never was intended to be one, but a shooter.

regards from Germany

Ulrich

If you're happy, then it's all good. Nice looking set-up. Wouldn't bother me a bit to drag it around with a smile on my face. Fact is, I drag it's big brother (My 625-6 4" MG in .45 Colt) around in the woods of Alaska.

Any decrease in perceived value will be offset by the years of enjoyment you get from your modified 624. It looks like a great carry gun with those stocks.

It looks very good. Back when I had my 624 I had Bowen Arms do a blackpowder chamfer job on the cylinder, it looked really nice but it certainly wasn't factory, but if you are happy with it, then go for it!

these are Retro Bananas by Kim Ahrends, as far as I'm concerned the best RB grips I found so far...

Ulrich I have you on the Ahrends. I just purchased a 696 from a forum member and will order those exact grips. What was your wood choice. Very nice. Mike

Personally, I would have gotten a 629 Mountain Gun and not chopped up a collectible.

as I live in Germany and we have crazy prohibitive gun laws, I do not have much choice. I saw a 629 MG for sale only once in about 10 years... I would not have had any problems getting a 629, but after 25 years with my 27-3 I'm really accustomed to the handling of the N-frame with tapered barrel, so it had to be the now so called MG configuration.

regards
Ulrich

Craig Spegel also makes a nice grip for the round butt. Here is my round butt 624 (3in) with ebony Spegels:

Those Ahrends look great too!
