Don't get old and fat!!!

We've a sunroom with sort of an informal gym. Has the bicycle, running machine and one of those machines that has all the flexable poles BOFLEX for your excersices. Trouble is you cannot get near one of them. Got so much **** stored in 5 gallon rubbermaid tubs it's rediculus. so until all the **** goes no excersizes. How one woman can amass that much junk is beyond me. Frank

Eat good food..exercise daily and sleep well.

There is no magic pill,potion,shot or wonder tool that will cure your basic health.

You would never consider putting in lousy fuel into your vehicle,yet so many do so daily to their bodies.They also neglect its maintenance to the point where it fails. I see it every day with cars.. and people.

Good health is a philosophy and once you embrace its demands, your life changes forever.
To live long and prosper is the desire of every human.

Don't dream about it..DO IT. You do not need to buy a magic machine.

Go to bed 1/2 hour early and wake up 1/2 sooner..and exercise.Start with stretching.30 reps. A simple routine of twisting at the waist.Bend over. Lift those arms over your head..raise those legs! Do breathing exercises as well. Draw the breath in.Then a little more.A little more...Hold it..then breathe out. You need extra oxygen to exercise. It's really not that hard or expensive (it's free!) to stay in shape.

But...it requires effort and discipline. You only get one life...choose wisely.

There are lots of old guys around and a lot of fat guys too, but I don't
see many old fat guys. I have gone down from 267 to 224 in just a few
months. I started on a low sodium diet and just started eating healthy
stuff. I could probably be called fat at the 267, but at 6'3" as my wife
used to say, I carried it well.

True, there are no short cuts, magic potions or fitness tricks. It takes a healthy diet, regular exercise and discipline. I've seen way too many people wasting time with "quick fixes" when they could have been getting noticeable results in the same amount of time.

72, work out 5 days a week since my 30's. Why not enjoy the fourth quarter as well as possible. A cracked rib from downhill mountain biking, however, does take longer to heal.

I've got a nice home gym room in the cave but I only use it when the weather is too bad to head out to my regular gyms. There's just too many distractions for me when I'm working out at home.
I am lucky to have two great 24 hour gyms within a 5 mile radius of my home and my health insurance, as many do, covers the cost thru a plan called "Silver Sneakers" 55 years old and above. Check out your health insurance, I'll bet most are covered.
Last year I earned $150 in gift cards for going. It's worth it for the insurance companies as they have healthier clients who live longer, thus less claims.

I just became a silver sneaker.
That's one of the reasons we haven't really built up a home gym. We do have some stuff that we use when the weather's bad. It just seems like we're more liable to work harder and more consistently if we actually go to the gym. Plus we usually have errands to run while we're out anyway.
Out here in small town West Virginia, "local" is within a 35 mile radius and the gym's "only" 31 miles away.
 
I met a guy at a commercial gym many years ago and we started lifting together since we were both interested in powerlifting while everyone else at that gym was into body building. In 1981 we decided to build a gym of our own in my basement and we've been lifting there 3 times a week for 40 years now.

Now I'm 70 and he's 64 and we often talk about the fact that so many of the people we know who are in our age group have multiple health problems while we are both enjoying excellent health. We both feel our years of work in the gym are a large part of the reason.

I weigh about the same now as I did when I first got serious about lifting over 40 years ago. Well, that's not exactly true as I lifted at 123 lbs the first couple years in competition then moved up to 132 lbs. I can still make weight at 132. I will admit those pounds are distributed differently now though as my waist is bigger and my chest is smaller. I think a certain amount of muscle loss is inevitable with age no matter what you do.
 
For the last 5 months I've been going to a boot camp. I lift weights best by myself but I don't have the willpower or desire for cardio so I do it best when someone is yelling at me! We have an instructor and do 45-60 minutes of cardio with no rest periods and workout on assault bikes, stairmasters, inclined treadmills, plus do burpies, pushups, situps, chinups, squats, barbell curls, sprints, etc. I'm barely able to walk to my truck when the class is over but I've gotten in the best shape of my life at nearly 63 years old and I'm ready to go and do about anything I did 20 years ago.

Too late. It's just way way too late

Wayne's courage, discipline, and determination are awesome. But I gotta be honest. I could never sustain a years-long effort (and that is what it would take) effort.

I admire his sharing his before and after pics too but I don't dare. Anyway I'm permanently entrenched in the "before" stage.

I have been able to work on my attitude toward exercise and and diet, thanks to Wayne's example . I have a vision but it's out there beyond the Hubble telescope so I'm safe for a while.
 
I weigh the same ( 250# ) as when I played college football in the late 1960s. I was a stud back then. NOW ?? I'm a disgusting fat old man.:o:D I can't do much exercise due to my bad back, so we bought a treadmill; so at least I get walk for 20 minutes every day. But I'm still a disgusting fat old man.:eek:
