I would not count on the Amish not protecting themselves, at least in my area. Over the last 20 years I've watched the Amish at the local gun shows transition from buying muzzle loaders, to single shot rifles and shotguns, to SKS and AK clones.

Reminds me of Burt in Tremors movie.
I do not believe in the innate goodness of humanity. I believe that the only thing that holds most people back is fear of punishment and I have absolutely no problem believing that there are people that would have no problem killing your family to take what they wanted from you. I actually have read a survival blog in which the author advised pimping out your wife or daughters in exchange for food or survival supplies
I also don’t see some total societal collapse in our future I think the mostly likely scenario is the one we’re in now; rising inflation, worsening economy, local governments unable to provide basic services coupled with a rising crime rate and greater instances of terrorism as the “War on Terror” comes home.
I foresee rising civil unrest as the welfare state is increasingly forced to cut benefits to the entitlement crowd. We’re already seeing flash mob incidents where mobs simply walk into a Wal Mart and walk out with whatever they want. I think our cities are going to become very dangerous places to live and that’s just going to be the norm but I don’t see “the grid” just ending.
To me the most common sense approach is to work on being self sufficient for a short term as in the after math of a natural disaster while waiting for services to be restored
