Dot sight for Shield Plus

I want to get a S&W Shield Plus for carry but can't figure out which dot sight to use. Lots of advice out there but it is confusing. I want to be able to mount the sight without using an adapter plate. (I will not use a Carry Comp model, just the standard Shield Plus.)
Any suggestions?

Shields/Shield Plus get a bit tricky with this for a couple of reasons:

Originally, they all had a standard RMSc footprint with the back posts. There was a rolling change to the Holosun K footprint, which is a modified version of the Shield RMSc footprint with slightly shorter front posts and no back posts.

There are spacer plates to let you use a Holosun K footprint optic on a standard RMSc footprint.

However, an added issue is that some Shields and Shield Plus have a negative forward cant that can make zeroing a Holosun optic impossible. My Shield Plus had this issue when I tried to mount an EPS Carry, which is regarded by many to be the best red dot in this form factor. I ended up sending it to Nameless Armament to get the cut corrected to the Holosun K pattern and leveled.

My choices in RMSc/Holosun K pattern optics:

Open emitter: Holosun 407/507K, Vortex Defender CCW Micro, SIG Romeo-X Compact
Enclosed Emitter: Holosun EPS Carry, SIG Romeo-X Enclosed Compact

If you go for the Vortex, make sure to get the updated model with the 10 minute auto shutoff, not the 14 hour auto shutoff. The updated model reportedly has a better LED emitter that's more efficient in spite of a faster refresh rate.

If you want assembled in the USA, SIG is the way in this size format. The flip side of that is that they're the most expensive and the South Korean sourced LED emitters don't have as long of battery life as the Chinese emitters.

With the Holosuns, the 507K will give you better battery life (especially with the circle dot reticle) simply because they use a bigger CR1632 vs the CR1620 in the EPS line. The EPS does, however, have better optical clarity in addition to being more weather resistant by virtue of having an enclosed emitter.

Beju - Thanks for the comprehensive post. Lots of information there. I have only one question. Is there a way to tell if a particular Shield Plus has the negative forward cant? I haven't bought the gun yet and would like to avoid that problem if possible.

Unfortunately, no.

There were hopes that the models with the Holosun K cut would address that, but Nameless Armament just posted an Instagram video of a new Shield Plus Carry Comp slide that still had the negative cant.

I've heard that the Vortex Defender has more elevation adjustment range than the Holosun K optics, but I haven't personally mounted/zeroed any of the Vortex dots.

I'm pretty sure they all have it by design. I picked up a DPP adapter plate and installed an RMSc red dot with no problems. The plate is very thin, and I had no problem zeroing in the dot. Had that not worked I was prepared to send the slide out to Nameless Armament to have it milled.

IMO Holosun and Trijicon are the only ones making carry optics that are worth while.

Thanks, guys. Looks like the Holosun EPS Carry and DPP adapter plate is the way to go.

The EPS Carry includes an EMSc to Holosun K adapter plate. The one that came with mine was slightly thinner than the DPP titanium plate that I bought.

Thanks guys. With all your advice, I put a Holosun EPS Carry on my Shield Plus using the DPP adapter plate and it worked out just fine. I put about 100 rounds of Gold Dots through it last Saturday without a single hitch. Shoots good and I like the Holosun sight.

I did not see this thread until after you bought a dot.. but you will like the Carry on it. I have had a 407K on mine for the last year or so but will be swapping it out to the Carry soon. Had the Carry on a Tisas..that has not worked out.. love the sight.. hate the Tisas..

+1 on the DPP plate

Nice, using the DPP adapter plate on mine originally with the 407k but am running the 507k now.

Great setup and that plate made it so easy.
