My son had the wining bid on this S&W at a sheriff auction today. I can't find it in my gun books. What can y'all tell me about it? Thanks Guy

It's a .38 Double Action Perfected Model, the last top-break introduced. As you noted, you have to lift the top latch and push the side latch to open it. 59400 made between 1909 and 1920. If you give a partial SN (123xx) we can tell you about when it was made. Hope this is helpful.

The production date is a guess on my part; there were probably none made during the later part of WW I and few post-war, so I would guess mid-1910s. Someone who has a factory historical letter on a nearby SN may have a better estimate.

I would guess $250-300 based on the finish condition in the photos, but others may have a different opinion on that too.

One of our forum members recently auctioned a collection on Gunbroker. Five of these in varying condition sold from $207 (ejector problems, non-matching grips) to $420 (nickel, good bore, factory pearl grips). The other three were $306, 355, and 405.

Is the barrel original length or cut? Front sight looks strange to me.
